I've had few pairs in the past and sold all of them due to being as far from the live music as possible. Do you also buy special £199.99 digital audiophile grade cables that transmit zeroes and ones responsible for "sound stage" and vocals clarity by any chance? Or perhaps those £99.99 audiophile power leads which you connect to kilometres of corrodes, 80 year old power grid? ;-) And I've got a denon Ethernet cable for audiophiles if you're interested, only £249.99. It transmits TCP/IP packets containing bass and high tones better than those cheap wires for transferring emails. Half of the letters on my screen used to appear wrong until I switched to a posh plug, honestly. "Live music" like at a concert? Depending on where you sit, how well the sound is setup there, it could be boomy as all hell and you can't hear anything but the boomy bass. We're not recreating a concert experience here, and I'm glad about that.
Headphones are quite subjective. It depends on many things. Comfort, sound quality, sound stage, sound signature, imaging, and more. If you like bass heavy headphones then sit back and enjoy them.

A great price but like most modern 'phones, the emphasis on bass response puts me off before I've even heard them. Sadly my favourite Beyer Dynamics have recently died, they were terrifically musical and I don't want to spend more then fifty on them as generally they are plugged into a PC more than anything more sophisticated but I abhor over heavy bass.

DT880 is your answer! (perhaps with a decent amp to tame the highs)

OR if you are an IEM guy... The Etymotic ER4B is my end game earphones. No other universal IEM has the same level of detail and clarity as the ER4B (my personal opinion and experience)

Depends on your budget and use....

I went to the Headroom Show at Metropolis Studios in Chiswick where i had the chance to listen to a rather epic selection of headphones and other headphone related gear. One of my surprise picks of the bunch was the bowers and wilkins p5.

They sound bloody epic and while more of a portable headphone could be used at home. Check some reviews on google.

They can also be picked up cheaper than RRP on B&W site at several well known retailers for about £199.

If your looking at more reasonably priced cans for at home i personally love my Grado sr80's! one of the best hifi bargains you are likely to find! you don't even need to use them amped! That said i use the Grado on my valve amp and they sound awesome.
None of the above could be described as bass heavy either!

If your looking for a cheap set to replace your broken Beyers and get you by... The DT231 or the newer version of it the DT235 can be picked up silly cheap on amazon and is a can i have loved for years! if you dont like them you have Amazon returns to the rescue!

I can not recommend enough, going and trying in the shop, as with all headphones it is a very personal experience. I have been through many pairs over the years only to shift them on the bay and try others!

I could go on but i need to go bed!

Hahaha this sums up a good portion of the audiophile community. Don't tar everyone with the same brush though.

Within an analogue circuit, shielded cables are incredibly useful, e.g if I hear buzzing then I would potentially replace a cable. I'm running a pair of Sony XB950, love them and yes, they are bass heavy, so shoot me if I like to listen to hip-hop or rap music and have an over the top bassline.

Everyone assumes that "audiophiles" are these stuck up, wine sipping, classical music listening weekend music lovers.

Well, I drink Merlot by the large glass or lager because honestly let's not pretend that a nice cold glass of lager isn't nice on a hot day, I couldn't care less for listening to classical scores and I get by with whatever budget hardware I can get my hands on, if it sounds good, wear it with pride. I don't consider myself an audiophile because of the stupid label that comes with it, but I am an enthusiast and love the technology side of AV.

If you're looking to stay on the cheap side, I grabbed a set of Superlux HD668B from Amazon for £30 the other week. (They're up to £35 now.)

Very happy with them. I bought them to use with a VR headset (their shape is perfect for this), but they seem pretty decent to me. Nice and balanced to my ears. I did replace the fake leather sweaty ears pads with much more comfy velour ones.

I've had plenty of experience with Audio Technica headphones(I've owned AD500, ES55, AD700 and the ES700) and I love them, tempted to buy these just to try them.

The AD700 are great headphones for gaming and movies with the HUGE soundstage but not so amazing for music, still good though.

I just bought a pair of Fidelio M1's as I got fed up waiting Audio Technica releasing their new lines over here, very impressed so far.


I also own a pair of 10RC's which are amazing for the money, only negative is the loose fit, they can fall off pretty easily.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to make suggestions (even if quite a few are more expensive than I would pay to plug into a PC!) I shall reinvestigate the Beyer range.

Oh and to the numpty who took offense at my dislike of heavy bass. Just grow the **** up.

Another vote for the Superlux HD668B from me. The B stands for Balanced, not Bass, and they provide a very enjoyable experience for ~£25.
