If you removed all elements of The Matrix, Aliens and Titanic out of the movie, would the 30 second clip that is left retail for £17 on blu ray. And if so, would it get voted hot or cold...

I see that comment a lot, but that really goes for a lot of movies. It is very well summarized by Joseph Campbell is The Hero's Journey in 1949, and is also known as the Monomyth. Just because it follows a known structure, doesn't make it a bad movie. Also look up the 31 narrathemes of Vladimir Propp, which follow all the Russian folk tale but also a surprising amount of modern films (Star Wars, Matrix and many more) step by step.

I'm afraid in this instance it most certainly does - moderate style over no substance.

Using a great deal of previosuly done ideas used in his own films, not the structure of the movie, is what ruined it for me. That and the stereotypical bad ass marines vs the Disney aliens.

its not a BAD movie-just not a great one. The cinema 3d was mindblowing and thats what made all the fuss about it-lets be honest-if you had seen this story in the cinema in standard 2d,you would have maybe enjoyed it on a reasonable level, but nobody would be raving about it as a "great" film would they?

Completely unoriginal story, some extremely ropey scripting and acting-it just wasnt brilliant.but the 3d was,and therein lies the problem-they will never replicate that 3d experience in the home-if they could then maybe would be worth the money for a diehard fan.

In any case-Im getting utterly sick of these directors cut cash ins-the ad for this in cinemas states "see the film as the director intended"-really? cameron had complete control of this movie-if this was how he "intended" it,why didnt we get it this way first time round? simple-cash in,rip off!

Avatar-eye popping,brilliant 3d-very,very average film tho.

"If you removed all elements of The Matrix, Aliens and Titanic out of the movie..."

In terms of originality, these other films don't do to well either- the Matrix was a remake of Dark City, Alien was based upon a 1950s B movie 'The Terror from Beyond Space', and Titanic, well, where do you start? The fact is that few films are truly original, but what most people miss about Avatar is that the themes are extremely complex: the transmigration of consciousness through technology, American imperial military expansionism, the manifest destiny and the attempted assassination of a God. Most of this bypassed the reviewers, which was probably why the film is so effective in pushing the right buttons for the viewers. Personally, I liked it a lot (despite it being a rip-off of Ferngully), but I still think that this deal is poor...

Themes are complex? Big evil company and their space marines want to rip up a poor alien's planet. Inception it ain'tst!
