First time post - hope it's all in order...

Best Buy are opening their first UK store in Lakeside, Thurrock this Friday at 7am. Being local to the area I got ridiculously overexcited when I saw the store being built as I've been to their stores in the US. Hopefully they'll have the same competitive edge over here in the electronics market and make Curry's et al rethink their pricing!

The first opening weekend deal they have announced is this one. Avatar BD and DVD combi pack for £9.99 (and just on DVD for £6.99).

You can become a fan of Best Buy UK on Facebook and see the new deals on there as they appear.

If I'm missed anything let me know and I'll amend accordingly!

Brilliant price if you can get there!

Hopefully it wont be long before more of these stores start opening around the country, I hear good things about them in the US!
#2
I read yesterday they have a plan for 8 stores by March 2011, and 100 stores by the end of 2013!

From there site

"As for our stores in Hedge End near Southampton and in Merry Hill in the West Midlands" and "Lastly, I’m delighted to announce that we’ll be opening a Best Buy store in Aintree, near Liverpool."

Looks like theres another 3 on the way.
#4
Hedge End Southampton? PC World and Currys are in for a good hiding then :) About time too ...
#5
Great price regardless if you liked it or not.

I for 1 loved it. I'll be in Thurrock next week so I'll pick up a copy.

Thanks op.
#6
hopefully BB will provide better competition than the DSGi and Kesa monopoly of the UK market (I know we should be supporting UK businesses, but I think we're all sick of the pricing and services of Currys/PCW/Comet et al).
#7
Ive been crazy in bestbuy store in the states many times always great deals shame its so far away! :(
#8
About time, I worked at CPW when BestBuy bought a large share to begin their invasion of europe. More competition in this area is always good.

(Its the reason carphone can afford to sell the Asus UL30A for £349)
#9
Anyone think you could price match this if PC world has it in?

.hope the redemption voucher system doesnt catch on here.
bestbuy us has some of the most interesting customer stories you will ever read.
the bbsux site not arround any more , so here it is coutesy of archive.org.

You could easily find the same complaints from disgruntled customers from DSG or Comet (people always naturally are more willing to vent problems), the advantage however here in the UK is you have the SOGA on your side if you are willing to persue if necessary.
#13
yeah i know. always was a bit 'omg what' when they only get 30 days warranty on new stuff in some states in the us.
Youll never find the same stories as we have trading standards who would kick thier ass.
yay for britain!
#14
good buy
boyfriend bought one in play.com for £12.99
what a cool price though
#15
Kept telling myself that I wouldn't buy this as it wasn't in 3D, sadly at that price I will be popping in on the way home Friday! H&R

Got mine from play.com too. Bit pricier, but well worth a watch, or 2... or 3.

These were £8 at Asda yesterday....

That was the DVD version, not Blu-Ray.

Were they? Are you sure it wasn't just the DVD for that price? :)

Oh no, the Yanks are invading!
#21
Hot price. I paid a lot more for the steelbook edition.
#22
My copy was delivered on Saturday from Play. Absolutely stunning visuals. Good price if you can get there but worth the extra few bucks from another reliable retailer as well.
#23
i hope when they get well established here that we get an online site, as the us best buy has some fantastic exclusives on dvd and blurays for us steelbook collectors, and i wont pay £50 on ebay for something i can get for well under half here.
as for the price great deal - i paid double but im happy as its the steelbook edition, book, lenticular art cards and glow in the dark t-shirt.

also blockbuster are doing this deal too for £9.99 but you need to trade in 2 blurays. but they can be any blurays, so if you have any for a fiver its ok if you have watched the films.

Walmart buying Asda in 1999 means they've already been here for over a decade.

(There is probably an ABC science fiction series there if you look for it)

BFN,

Was going to buy this from Tesco entertainment but will hold off until Friday. Glad we finally have a Best Buy in the UK. Been to USA numerous times and the sores there are awesome. Bet the likes of PC Word and Comet are getting worried about Best Buy finally getting here.
#26
Not sure they'll do the same over here, but to give you an idea of the offers they do in the US, I bought a Bose SoundDock 2 in Best Buy (Miami) last December. I paid $249.99 plus around 8% tax (exchange rate was around $1.65 = £1 at the time - so approx £165 all in)

Over here they still sell for around £249.99 inc VAT...

And of course I declared it on the way back at Heathrow. ;-)

Too right. Roll on June
#28
People complain about manger specials etc and expire the deal but this is a deal in one store in the whole uk and it gets over 500 degree , wtf lol..
#29
I'm heading to BestBuy on saturday :) I just hope it lives up to its US counterparts!
#30
it wont be a patch on the US ones. it'll still be staffed by ex DSGI and comet folks who will be target driven and eager for you to part with cash in order to get sales bonus.

over hyped toss thats no different from what Currys or Comet already do.

its the UK, not the US.
the prices will all be around the same, the delivery networks won't be set up the same, they won't have the buying power in the UK, they're an American company untested in europe.

in a years time everyone will hate them just as much.
they may possibly end up acquiring someone like Comet, who are smaller and in a much worse financial position than DSG tho
#31
The opening/appearance of more BestBuy stores might happen sooner than you think if this rumored takeover is true! Lots of stores for them to rebrand.....

doubt it would happen. Best Buy are just spinning stories to make the UK public think they're getting something better.
have you seen how many UK and foreign businesses that DSGi have?

I really don't see them letting an American company take over and get rid of the Currys, Dixons and PC World brandings

Not up to them, its up to their shareholders.
#34
indeed so but do shareholders want to sell out to make a quick buck on an untested company in the UK market?

Sure Best Buy are better to confirm themselves as a decent competitor first, then try to take over.
#35
Essex seems a strange place for Best Buy to expand their empire, £10 is pretty good considering the DVD on its own has been selling for around £7 or £8
#36
I read about best buy yesterday, something to do with carphonewarehouse :)

I don't know why this deal has gotten so hot though, it's unlikely most people can get to Thurrock

It doesnt look far off from opening to me. The nearby Currys is undergoing renovation in order to compete and the management there were telling me they were expecting a flood of price matching.
#38
Sounds a good deal....but being on the wrong side of the river means having to pay for the Dartford bridge and tunnel which bumps up the price!
