What is on this that you can't get for free?
#2
Its a old version anyway and probably not supported for long so need to check if get free upgrade to 2011, not that I would touch AVG now anyway
#3
Just download Microsoft essentials......much better.
#4
Why are you avoiding AVG - is there something bad I've not heard about?
#5
AVG is very good however, this version is quite old.

I would go for the free version of AVG over security essentials anyday though.

I got an offer on an older version of AVG last year. You can usually upgrade it to the latest one fore free.
#7
Lots of problems as it clashes with Zonealarm.

i used avg for years with no problems until this year and it let some virus's through and i had all kinds of problems my laptop crashed all together in the end and i had to send my laptop back and they found all kinds of hidden virus's, p.s the avg was the full paid version i had, i am now useing norton's 360 v4 and my laptop now runs fine.

AVG isn't bad, use it on my Mum's PC with no problems and best of all it's free!

I have avoided AVG ever since they released an update that detect system files as viruses making the computer blue screen on bootup. http://securityandthe.net/2008/11/10/avg-virus-scanner-removes-critical-windows-file/

Its also slow, has a crappy toolbar and also a low detection rate.

Any links to the free AVG? please.
#12
google Avg free

When you navigate and go to AVG Free it takes you round the houses up the stairs, anywhere but AVG Free, it's as if they don't want you to have the free version at all, it's not simples at all! Anybody have a direct link that actually works?
#14
Current versions of AVG are a bit too heavy on the computer and slow it down a bit too much for my liking. Personally I'd just stick to MSE which runs faster and uses less system resources.

I go the Bigpockets offer last year, 3 user licence for 2 years, £8.50 or £10 ish, it was version 8 but upgraded straight away to 9. It is painfully slow though, have to turn off the scheduled scan when you actually want to use the machine!! Also, installed straight away on one machine and 2 years worked from then as it showed the expiry date, didn't bother with number 2 until 6 months or so down the line and get this, the same product key but this was again 2 years from installation, haven't installed the 3rd yet, will save that for my next laptop!!

My personal fav is Avast at the moment, lighter on PC resources, much better detection rate and easier interface and good update servers for free.
Not used MSE but I know from experience that it is stopping viruses on my machine due to its alerts, have seen a fair few infected AVG that I have had to sort.

Possible you were infected by the ramnit variant of viruses which are incredibly difficult to get rid of once it is infected (Avira and Avast stopped these on execution on my system)

its great at not telling you that you have a virus.

Its a PC shops dream and keeps me in beer tokens from all my mates when I have to fix their PCs

I do lol at people saying their PC runs fine with it. Put a proper AV solution on and prepare to be amazed at the viruses you have had for years.

csiman, try logging on to cnet.com there you will find avg free and others if you change your mind. I have used the paid version of avg for last 2 years used the free version for 3 years before that and have not had a problem. I will check out what others have said and see if I discover anything hidden.

you'd have to pay me hundreds to let AVG FREE anywhere near my computers. Just check MISC to see so many people asking for help with viruses that AVG FREE let through.......

it doesnt even always let you know that you have viruses a lot of the time so people like you think your PCs are uninfected.
