Or you could get Microsoft Security Essentials for free

Which unfortunately does not protect against rootkits, keyloggers, drive-by downloads or scareware.

i couldnt get eset smart security to install on my win7 dell 1720 something about permissions gave up on it eventually, shame really, excellent security while not hogging resources, sigh

not keen on avg myself, not voted either way

The free versions of AVG or Avast combined with a good free firewall, free Ad-Aware, free Spybot, are more than sufficient for protecting you. More complex protection can cause more problems.

What you can't protect yourself from are carelessness and responding to spam, so your own input is always needed, no matter how good/bad your software is.

Works fine on my Windows 7 (64-bit) system, worked fine on my old Vista system as well.

With regards to permission, make sure you install and run the program as an Adminstartor and you will be fine.

For a free firewall check out Comodo firewall :) I use that and AVG free. They both have to be updated manually but they let you know when updates are available.
