What a wonderful way to turn your PC into crap for only a tenner! Seriously, AVG, Norton/Symantec, and Kaspersky are only marginally better than the viruses and nasties they are supposed to protect you against. When you install AVG, for example, expect a good amount of your programs to stop running due to its overzealous security policies (AVG and the others don't care if they make you spend hours and waste other companies' tech support resources because AVG has effectively broken your PC - it will not come back to hurt them, after all!). Avoid. It's rubbish.

Would not stick this on someones computer if it was the full version and free.

Used to use AVG until I realised that it was not so secure as I thought and it stopped perfectly legit software from operating.

Replaced it with Avast and its much better but also use Advanced System Care and Iobit that lot keeps me safe without screwing up my system

I don't think anyone has ever knocked Norton, it's just always been an incredible system hog.

People always vote things like this cold because there are free versions. But this is a good product and a good price -- have some heat.

It's THE virus writers main target. It maybe not their fault, but there's a reason why it needs to hog, in need of constant updates, requires paid for licences, becomes uninstallableable, and work in the backwards manner it usually does. Typically happens when an antivirus company becomes popular.

Does anyone know if Avast slows your PC down like AVG, is it better?

Sorry to be a pedant, but I reckon that stating that a security system is ' only marginally better than the viruses and nasties they are supposed to protect you against.' could be classed as a knock type statement.

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking to do. Does it last for a year like AVG Free?

Why do people think a free anti virus product is a good replacement for a full internet secuity suite.

The number of misinformed people who just say "put on AVG it is free" or "put on Avast it is free" when it is replacing a full interent security suite.

There is much more to PC security than viruses and most free anti virus products ONLY look for viruses (a few also do some malware checking).

I think Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is one of the few free products that looks for viruses AND malware / spyware.

Funnily enough I've just bought new internet security licenses, not from any of the names mentioned so far - but from Trend Micro.

It's an expensive product, but doesn't hog resources and is not intrusive, the prevention/detection technologies are class leading (no I don't work for them) - anyone remember the "Melissa Virus" circa 1999? - I was in charge of over 500 desktop/laptops and a lot of servers, we had Trend Micro Office Scan and didn't get hit (although the exchange server wilted under the load of incoming emails)

It can be found cheaply though, I usually look on eBay USA and pick it up (covers 3 PC's) for between £9 & £14 depending on the exchange rate - (I download the trial version and use the serial number from the seller, save on postage)

Microsoft Security Essentials..Avast...Avira
...Who can comment on which one to go for?

Microsoft Security Essentials works for me.
Have used it lots of times to remove virus's that McAfee and Norton have let on systems.
