Why the cold? This is a pretty good deal considering it has a HD-DVD drive, massive HD, better graphics than a lot of US custom sites (e.g. Costco) allow!

Does anyone have any first hand experience with this machine? It's a hefty price and I wonder if it gets red hot and sounds like a hovercraft.

It's pretty expensive other than the HDDVD drive, and those couldn't be costing manufacturers more than 50 quid nowadays. You'd also want more than 1280*800 on a laptop this price, not to mention to play HD with.

i have the same model, but without the hd drive, but with built in bluetooth and GT card rather then GS

have 2 say this is one top laptop... runs all the applications i need ( all adobe applications, 3ds max) and most top games out flawlessly (bioshock, guitar hero 3, gears of war) with most settings on high

built quality is excellent.. sound quality is crisp (built in subwoofer)

might not be cheap but well worth it

To be truly Hot this needs to be ~£700... but it's still a very good price for a laptop of the specification. HD-DVD, 250GB HDD /and/ a Geforce 8600? Very very nice.

This looks like the next model on from my Acer 5865WLMi which was from Woolworth's back in May... that was £699 without the HD-DVD. Comparable processor (T7200) and graphics, though (7600). http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51344&highlight=acer+5685wlmi

I've been looking for a new notebook, and it was a choice between the 5920 or the 7720. I've gone for the 7720 at £670, sim specs, but without HD dvd (cos I don't own any HD DVDs), and I hope I can add a 2nd HDD.
These Acer models have HDMI so can hook up to your LCD tv for HD playback, so 1280 x800 isn't such an issue.. all new notebooks with HD DVD have similar screen res.

about play.com though, I've ordered many things before, no problems.
this was my first high value order, and bad comms. 'posted' yesterday, no sign of today, no note of courier/tracking number etc.:x
so, good price, but I won't be happy till it arrives.

I have the same but have added the turbo memory module.
Acer no longer seem to make this model anymore, they have upped the hard disk size from 160gig to 250, added a HD drive (£75 on Ebay) and lowered the graphics card spec from a 8600GT to a 8600GS which is a major mistake imo.
Mine is currently running the Crysis bargain which was on this board a few days ago on medium settings (high is too much of a struggle) with no problems at all. You will need to spend a fair bit more before being able to run the game on a laptop with any major performance gain.
Mine was £720 del from Laskys.

For gods sake stay away from Acer

These guys spend more money on advertising than they do on their customer support and laptops

I've had an Acer Laptop for a couple of years now and it's been trouble from day one, its been back to acer 5 times!, it over heats, locks up, hangs and the case has been replaced twice due to hinges cracking and other plastics failing.

The reason they are cheap is because they are

i think you guys have been unlucky. Acer are a decent brand and in fact are one of only four true global notebook ODMs and OEMs. HP an Dell don't OEM their own notebooks anywhere in the world but guess who does?

And I bet if you made a guess as to what position Acer have in worldwide PC shipments share (are they 8th, 2nd, 5th) you'd probably guess wrong unless you live and breathe it every day like I do (working for the big IT sauce company). And BTW they are only getting bigger and bigger.

Well you cant rule out a a complete brand due to a particular model you are having problems with.

The new aspire range are very different from the old ones, and the new travelmates are extremely well build.

I have a HP that have given me nothing but problems, that wouldnt stop me from buying a HP again - it would just make me avoid that model and the particular range as they are be based on the same chassis.
