Would like to see this in HD, would be tempted if I had a Blu-ray drive. Bizarrely the HD-DVD was only released in Asia and stupidly split across three volumes! :-(
#5
This seems like a possible misprice, but I'll put my preorder in now just in case it's not.
#6
Do HMV take the money now, or when it's being dispatched?
#7
This is an amazing series in SD never mind Hi-def. Brilliant price as well.

HOT!

If its anything like when i've pre-ordered games, they will only take the payment at the delivery stage.

Dont seem like a mis price, it isnt ludicrously cheap and its a series with 1 hour episodes so it probably is the real price.

Wait and see - the HD version which was released in Asia only was close to GBP 100 & various US forums state that the RRP is around USD 150, expecting Tower and Amazon to sell this for around the USD 100 mark..
#11
Awesome find. Taken advantage of it!. Cheers
#12
Remember folks, if this is a misprice, they WILL cancel your order no matter how many (or few) you or anyone else has ordered.

Just thought I'd get that out there before someone posts saying they've ordered 5 and someone else starts a big argument about how they're "ruining" it for everyone.
#13
it does seem very cheap - iirc the sd box set was about £60when first released, so this will be a bargain if it comes off. That said, apart from improved sound, I'm not sure exactly how the image could be improved bearing in mind it was supposed to be video like and gritty.

Good find though. Voted hot
#14
such a great price for the best series on tv! Cant see them honouring it though! Still, pre-order placed
#15
I don't know really, it's not mega cheap - but it's a great release I'll grant you that.

It's still £35 for old stock admittedly transferred to Bluray though. Not forgetting the existing DVD set costs barely £15 and would look awesome blown up on a 1080p upscaling DVD palyer with a great TV.

Just about 'hot' - I've just ordered one so that tells you everything really.

p.s. it's def pretty good value if we all end up with that beautiful tin set in post #2 - looks like the Blade Runner tin set - beautiful. Hope we don't end up with cardboard!

Great series, I saw all the eps in Feb/March - a truly filmic scale series. Quite brilliant

Where did that pic come from?
#17
HMV have a pre-order price policy so they should honour this. Seems cheap but as others have remarked it is an old series by all accounts, they're essentially just milking the revenue on it.

I've ordered a copy - never seen it before but heard rave reviews so should be nice to experience it in HD on the first bounce.
#18
Top series, despite starring 'Ross' from Friends.
Think this is still going for £30(ish) in Asda for SD (on DVD).
#19
Matrix Tril is only £15 on Blu, so this doesn't seem too far off, but who knows.

Keep an eye on it with www.find-dvd.co.uk

Wicked price comparison site.

Voted hot.

Just be warned that It looks as if that HMV are selling the boxed version and NOT the tin version that has been pictured on this forum.

the US link below the picture contains a few other links, on one of them you see the pic.

To Clarify - the picture is from a US source - I am not claiming that the UK version will be the same..

Amazing series for an amazing price, very hot imo :)

Watched it in hd on V+ 2 months ago....just beautiful :D
#23
I bought this on DVD for £50 - Bargain!
#24
Good price for HD but that blue across the cardboard section of the set looks terrible. Compare with the with the 'not in your face' DVD release.

There will definitely be a big difference in quality, even though Band of Brothers has a "grainy" look to it, it'll still be a big boost in image quality.
Think of it this way, if upscaling DVD's looked just as Blu-Ray's, there'd be no need for Blu-Ray films.
#27
How do people know there will be big difference? Most people have not seen BoB in HD yet! Try upscaling your DVD copy on your PS3 and report how good it is.

Because otherwise there will be no point in releasing it on Blu-ray. Name one film that looked no better in HD than on DVD.
Besides, someone above mentioned that it was on V+ recently and said it looked brilliant.

Or put it this way, if you've got a blu-ray player already then for this price, you can't go wrong since it's
about £10 more than the DVD version anyway.
#29
I wasnt convinced that "I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry" looked any different in HD than if I'd watched an upscaled SD version. That said, BOB has a few more "big" scenes that should look better in HD although I wouldnt expect a huge difference (not having BD at the mo, I'll rewatch the SD version).

As stated it's a good price for a great series (and a good way to hype up "The Pacific" which should be out next year)

Speaking as a user who's a non-techy, I got the top of the range Sony 32 inch lcd and a ps3 connected via hdmi.

Anyway if the picture is grainy on the original DVD you won't get much in the way of a better picture - I tried some battlestar galactica and early X-Files which are originally grainy and the picture was rather poor if honest - made the grainy video look the same if not worse.

On the other hand if you have some DVD's like the Firefly set which is pretty decent, and has been shot with fantastic cameras it's awesome upscaled.

My old DVD copy of Firefly literally looks almost HD quality. I was grinning like a cheshire cat - no need for an upgrade of a Bluray Firefly now:-D

ahh guys, this could start of a massive debate on quality of this and that. there are SO many factors including transfer, original print quality, upscaling, quality of equipment, the lot.

For me anything pre 2005ish, and I mean approx 2005, I don't buy on Blu ray or HD DVD unless stupidly cheap as I have noticed lots of blu rays being grainy due to the original print or rushed transfer. A Knights Tale and The Rock being prime example of me being really, really disappointed with the quality. And AKT didn't even have extras on it and the DVD bloopers are great.

New films are generally geared around HD def releases, so usually top notch. Transformers and Spiderman being a prime example of films that you could see in hi def at certain cinemas and look nothing less than stunning on blu ray/hd dvd in my humble opinion.

I have voted hot, but I am torn, I don't want to receive this and be disappointed. I might hire from a blockbusters and then buy....a good spot nonetheless, thanks.

*EDIT* I've watched this about 6 times, HMV say Tom Hanks is in it! Are they getting confused with Saving Private Ryan or have I missed him? I've succummed to ordering!
#33
Tom Hanks was the Executive Producer of the show I think. Him and Spielberg decided to do this while making Saving Private Ryan - they probably read the book while preparing or something. Tom Hanks character in Saving Private Ryan is pretty reminiscent of Lt/Cpt/Maj Winters, with a bit of Buck Compton thrown in.

BoB upscaled through a PS3 onto a Samsung 40" M87 in 1080p looks very good. But compared to say Blade Runner on Blu-Ray (even older stock guys) its nothing. I'm very tempted. Even more so after looking at the comparison pics.
#34
My mate was in this, he played the dead German that they steal the luger off in the 2nd or 3rd episode!

"Tom Hanks, the director of Part 5 of Band of Brothers, "Crossroads", makes a cameo as a member of the Red Devils. I have been looking for this for awhile but only recently discovered it after purchasing the 6-disc DVD set.

To find it, fast forward to about the 31:50 time mark on disc 3. This is the scene of the Red Devils and the 101st Airborne Division celebrating. You will see the large group of men "here here-ing" to a speech being made. At this timeframe, look at the upper left hand side of the screen. You will see Hanks, wearing a Red beret, very close to the back of the scene. He does look over and becomes obscured by the soldier in front of him."

hope this helps. it doesn't really justify hmv saying he is 'in' it, but still....

Thanks for the link =)

Just in case anyone was wondering, even 1080p is inferior to 35mm film, so you can definitely expect this to look a lot better than the DVD version.
#38
guys need to be pretty honest here, when i watched this through my playstation 3 it upscales brilliantly and thought it was on blu ray, so no need to waste my money on upgrading, but what a incredible series. dont think its a mis price because the original boxset is about £15 so £20 more sounds about right, same for planet earth really.
#39
How can you say it looks like it was on blu-ray if you haven't watched it in HD?
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it looked fan-bloody-tastic and I dare say if you already have this on DVD, you wont miss much, but if you DON'T have it and have a PS3 sitting in the corner crying because Microsoft just slapped it about a bit last night, then you may as well get this one since the price isn't that far gone from the DVD version.

what he said.

if you are happy with upscalling then thats great, but you can't compare it with an actual hd/blu-ray release.
