My maiden post, so apologies in advance for any errors.

One for popular science afficianados:

A large, handsome, full colour, layman's introduction to the dawn of the universe / astro physics. This was two years in the making, and written by Queen guitarist (and doctor of Astro-physics) Brian May, Patrick Moore and Chris Lintott. Stuffed full of large photographs, this coffee table book is highly readable for non scientists; and has excellent reviews all round from newspapers and periodicals (and a uniform 5 star rating from all Amazon reviewers too). I have been looking at buying this for a while, so I was delighted when I saw it reduced to just £8 delivered from a retail price of £20.

Thanks Feeble, welcome to HUKD :)

I think this looks pretty good but does anyone have the book and would it be too complicated for a 9yr old?

I have this book and it is a very good read but it is quite a bit above a 9 Y O, great price though.

Well thanks for the welcome to the forum :-)

I would say this is beyond the level of the non Mensa 9 year old - although they might enjoy the ubiquitous glossy photographs. I would say the level of this is for an adult, casual reader of popular science who finds "A Brief History of Time" too stodgy. It is not really comparable to Bill Bryson's excellent history of science book as the focus is narrower i.e. the origins of the universe and its contents (including us).

Does anyone know what the difference is between this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bang-Complete-Universe-Brian-May/dp/0801889855/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229521276&sr=1-1 and the one posted other than £10 and a later publishing date, is it a revised edition?

Edit: Just answered my own question, that one is published by The Johns Hopkins University Press the one posted is by Carlton Books, presumably they are the same text.
