Hi,

I've got a Barclaycard platinum card which is a free card by them that I never use. Called them up to cancel it and was put through to retentions and they have put a £50 credit on my card to spend on whatever and I can then cancel the card after that if I still want too.

Got to be worth a go for some of you have one laying about in your wallet/purse!

Thanks

Dan

although highly likely account specific, seems good.

hahaha i remember this years ago when i had a barclaycard, call to cancel and they gave me £20.

its very dependent if they have put any interest or charges on the account, but may be lucky to get £20 or more as the OP has.

I got that too. I've seen it suggested that Amex are about to cancel their agreements with Barclaycard so I took it on the off chance that happens and they subsequently have to boost their Visa to more than 0.5% - it's a long shot but I had nothing to lose.

I just got £20 a few days ago too. Spent it, about to call up and cancel again!

Like a few, had a card for 18 years! Tried to get a "new customer" deal, they said no. I said I'd leave and they did nothing. Hot if you get something

Problem was I didn't owe them much money, ultimately with any finance company, the more you make them, the more they will "take care" of you :)

Did this a while back, got offered £20.

This will be account specific and how they score your account on their system for the retention policy. It will vary from platinum card to platinum card and also vary across all the other cards they issue. It's not a sure thing and once you've been offered it, the next time you call to cancel you're pretty much assured to get offered nothing.

Just tried it and they said ok they are happy to cancel. Got scared and had to make some phone interference noise then put the phone down!

Typical Irresponsible credit card companies trying to keep people in debt.
Good for you if you cancel the card after spending the 50.00, but even if 25% of people dont cancel, they have made millions worth of debt from those that dont cancel and keep spending.
Says the guy that took credit cards for granted. I have never went into debt management, but have went from £10,000 debt to £2500.00, I will never make the same mistake. We live we learn eh!

Update on my last post- I rang again and this time I got £20 free. The key is to say you only hold 1 credit card at a time and you have been offered a deal (make a deal up) elsewhere so you are cancelling barclaycard. They will try to keep you by offering some 0% interest over 6 months nonsense (pointless for me because I pay off in full after every month) or a new type of card . Keep rejecting then when you are on the verge agreeing to leave they offer you £20- then accept to stay. So deal is hot!

Thanks, one of the funniest things I've read for a while.

I'm going to try it, but will only accept £50 like the op. Now off to figure out how to do that without letting them cancel for nothing in return.
