I have a question been seeing all these great Dell deals about, thanks MikeT.

But whats the difference between the Viiv and normal Core2Duo, I understand its something to do with DRM rights, will it affect anything I do on my computer play XVids etc??
[mod]#3
The Viiv cpu's have a couple of extra instructions enabled that are used to enhance media center operations, it wont affect your being aable to play divx/xvid files.
[mod]#4
Suprised this hasnt had more interest with the Quidco £25 off and the 4.5% cashback too even applying without a cpu upgrade as its £415 before vat/del

I bet its up in price by at least £70 by the weekend once they realise their mistake.

Unlikely to be put up, as this Ecode/system has been available for the last few weeks. Was thinking of ordering one myself but was put off by the small hard disk in comparison to other systems. I got a better deal phoning them.

Yes both the ecodes have been available since 2nd Feb, but the upgrading the cpu may not have occured to Dell as a way of getting an extra gig of ram for less than the system code next to it. If its bought in the upgrade config in any numbers it will alert them to it and no doubt then the price will change.

How does this look? I need a new computer and want one that is fast with a fair amount of memory. I play a few games. I am trying to look to the future as I don't want to have to upgrade within a couple of years! :?

I am not that experienced and would appreciate any comments please

Looks like you have it all sorted there Caba, should do all you need and more. The video card isnt the best but it is the best Dell will offer with this system and as you dont play many games it will no doubt be more than fine for your use.
Dont expect too much from the sound bar though, its a space saver but not really up to hifi quality for most people. You may be better saving the cash from that and getting some other system for your sounds.
Works suite I wouldnt buy at £47, it comes with works anyway and Open office is a free download for anything else you meed.
Apart from that its all good!

Thanks Mike - just the advice I needed

Instructions? Extra? Enhanced?

Sorry, Mike, you have swallowed Intel’s hype. It is just a badge.

CPUs are identical.

It is simple Intel’s certification crap for media centre compatible components. Same as AMD’s Live! technology but making more money.

Same chipset/mobo/other hw used. Dell just mentions certification when needed.

Hi, This seems to be a competitively priced machine IMHO. One thing that's causing confusion though is whether or not the optional ATI Radeon 256Mb X1300 Pro Graphics Card has got DVI connectivity. There's no mention of this particular Graphics Card on the euro.dell.com web-site. Does anyone have any ideas at all please?.

256MB ATI® Radeon® X1300 Pro graphics card [add £23.50]
Dell recommends a 256 MB dedicated graphics card for an enhanced Windows Vista experience

Only Graphics Cards that are mentioned are the one's here:
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/learnmore/learnmore.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs&~id=gfx_cards&~lt=popup&~series=all&~subcat=dimen&~tab=details

Another question, Are recovery media Cds or DVDs supplies as standard or do Dell put them onto a hidden partition on the hard disk?.

Thank you.

Voted hot!.
[mod]#12
When "building my dell" go to graphics card selection and click on learn more, then select the detail tab and all the specs are there for you.

Everything , drivers and a mirror of the original OS is in the hidden partition. If no OS disc is supplied which btw I have seen no mention of since Vista arrived, ususally dell make it so you can make one copy of it when you first start up the machine.

Is this a widescreen 19" tft or a square display?.

Is this Acer one any good at PC World?, £485 with a 19" widescreen but only half the RAM, could someone tell me how the processors compare because this dual core / core 2 duo stuff is baffling.

It's not bad..but I would prefer to go for one of the Intel Core 2 Packard Bell refurbs from PCWORLD and the Hanns widescreen featured on HUKD as a HOT DEAL

6% quidco and maybe another 5% using code YAWF07..at PCWORLD that is.

The 19 inch with DELL is not widescreen
#16
Is there anyway to remove the monitor off these deals? I already have a good one, and don't want another...
[mod]#17
This deal is still available from Dell this week.
#18
thnaks Mike, it seems this is prob the best deal, also last days to take advantage of the additional £25 quidco.
#19
I got this machine last week, cracking deal and its great.
One question for Mike - i got a fax/modem, but Vista Home Premium does not have the fax software!! only in Vista Business. Seems i can only upgrade to Ultimate for over £100. Any other way around this problem to get the Windows fax software?
[mod]#20
praju, I have had a search through dells vista forums and cant find an answer for you. I suggest a call or email to Dell UK customer support as they sell it as a fax/modem with Vista as the OS so you are expecting it to work with the OS you purchased. There is no warning on the build your dell page to suggest otherwise. Give them your problem and make them sort it for you. Maybe a free OS upgrade ;-)

Edit: take a look here for confirmation.

Thanks Mike, yes bit of a problem, any other potential buyers who need to fax should really be made aware, and get the Business edition.

I'll call Del tomorrow and see what i can do, otherwise i have seen alternatives for about $29 - snappyfax.
