Where can I get a HD DVD player????

These deals are stupidly cheap and even wasting (?) £50 on a throwaway HD set must be worth it on the savings on DVD's!!!!!

I purchased an EP30 from Empire Direct (in-store) last weekend for £59. Alternatively you can buy one of these and play/rip them from your PC.

I own both. The EP30 is in the living room and I use the PC HD-DVD drive to rip my movies so they play on the PS3 in my games room.

£12.48 @ Dvdi - although doesn't state whether in stock.

American gangster is a bargain at £6.95, it's been as low as £5.
But still it's cheaper than the DVD

I ordered BSG from them last week and they sent me an email today saying out of stock. Do not use DVDi because they don't have stock. God knows when they will refund me.

That's why I found DVD.CO.UK's deal and posted it. Have ordered here many times without a problem. They deliver quickly too.

Know what you mean, but there are so many HD DVD bargains about, e.g. Heroes at a quarter the cost of "normal" DVD its getting to the point of being silly!

Think I might listen to orville and buy to rip!

A tip for people wishing to rip HD-DVD's to PS3 playable MP4. The programs you need are:-
AnyDVD HD (doenload the free 21 day trial) - copies HD-DVD to hard drive
EAC3TO (freeware) - extracts the video and audio streams.
VC1CONV (freeware) - converts the video to 24fps to make it more compatible with audio timings.
TSMUXER (freewae) - combines the audio and video back into one big file.
MediaCoder (freeware) - encodes the file into PS3 compliant MP4 (use Archos AV Series pre-set).

I convert my discs to 720p and keep files sizes to 4GB or lower. Quality is excellent at this size. Go to DOOM9 forums for full instructions.

Rude not to at this price.

Hi all,
price is great but I have read other forums where people are saying that the quality is still not great, even for HD?
Has anyone seen the HD version? If so, are they confused with the quirky, handheld approach, which can look shoddy, or is it really that bad? Just wondered cos I would def buy at this price if it is HD,
cheers peeps

I haven't got the DVD to compare my HD boxset to, but it looks to me very much like the style and the way it was shot, rather than there being a major problem with the transfer. I managed to get one from 4cheapcds for £12.50, and am really pleased with it. I think the problem is that a lot of people think that if something looks bright and shiny (eg Casino Royale) then that means that it's a great picture, and that any HD films/TV that dont look like this are disappointing, when a lot of the time it's just the way things are shot or even the age. I have a huge collection of HD DVDs now, and there are only a few that I would say are "eye-popping" (one of which is Pan's Labyrinth) but on all the ones we've bought I've seen an improvement over the DVD versions. Even those which people say don't look great have much more detail in the picture than the DVD. That is, afterall, what HD is - more detail in the picture. It won't make a film that was shot in a very stylised manner, or that's very dark and grainy look bright and "eye-popping".

Haven't DVDi been named as being a pretty bad company to deal with as they never update the status of what's in stock?

Great post and I agree fully. Basically think of seeing HD DVD as seeing the media presented in the best possible way it can look. I have about 60 HD DVD's and every single one looks better than upscaled DVD. Do they all look stunning? Nope, as the saying goes "you can't polish a turd".

I think some of the most impressive transfers are of older films, 2 that spring to mind are Enter the Dragon & The Graduate. In pure eye candy terms, neither are outstanding, but in comparison to the DVD versions they are amazing. For people wanting real "OMG look at the HD on that" check out Shrek the Third, Transformers, Terminator 2, Pans Labyrinth to name but a few.

Wow, I wasn't actually going to buy this until I read the description as I already have it on DVD. However, this includes the 4 pilot too. Sometimes, ya just gotta roll the hard six :P

Don't forget to go via Quidco for 4% off. :)

I got mine for £12.48 from DVDi.co.uk

Good price but after the state it arrived in I will not be shopping with them again.

The jiffy bag it came in was so ripped to shreds you could clearly see what was inside. One corner of the Galactica box is partially damaged but not a lot, about the same as general wear and tear so can't be bothered to go through returns just to be told the disks work fine.

Might send them an email with my thoughts though, never know, could get a voucher or something. :P

...you'll find it at 101cd.com for 14.97 quid at the time of writing, but I suspect once their stock has gone, that'll be it for sub-20 quid prices for the box set (it's not cheap anywhere else at the moment).
