Is this the mono version or the stereo one?

Owned 2 different CD versions of this in the past, the mono one with "Trombone Dixie" and the one containing both the stereo & the mono versions & the bonus of "Hang on to your ego".

Personally i do prefer the stereo mixes, maybe it's a generational thing ;-)

Anyway a great album for anyone who hasn't got it already but i'll stick to the latter cd mentioned above which i suspect is the one to have.

I posted the stereo & mono version some time back.. I have this version but must admit only play the stereo version - as wilson was a genius at engineering I would say this version is the better mix , but I understand it's a matter of taste - ther is always the complete box set which has everything

I'm sure I will be flamed to oblivion for asking, but what is it with the Beach Boys? I never understood the big deal or the critical acclaim. To me it just sounds like a bunch of 60s surf dudes singing about girls - nothing revolutionary about that.

Heat for price though as I'm sure there are many here that will appreciate it.

You really should listen to more of their stuff then and not just the early surf sounds. In the mid 60's Brian Wilson was edging away from the 'formula' sound culminating in this genius album. Must admit though I cant hear many surfing songs on Pet Sounds!

Also remember it was upon hearing this album that a certain Beatle was blown away and decided to write Sgt Peppers.

Looking forward to Smile getting released this year (if it doesn't get cancelled again).

For great post-surf rock era stuff try:
Our Prayer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swQ1h_As22Q
Surf's Up - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2_wBbS7I08
And you've probably heard Good Vibrations.. :)

Or you can read my article on why God Only Knows was the best song of the last 50 years and see if that changes your opinion - http://jsty.wordpress.com/articles/the-sentinel-rock-of-ages-brian-wilsons-romantic-masterpiece/ :-)

Much of what was great apart from the super tight vocals was the way the various sounds in the song interact to paint you a vivid picture and spring an emotion to life. Beach Boys music makes you feel.

Hot deal!

As an aside, is anyone here going for Brian Wilson's concert in the Royal Festival Hall this September?

Shame Brian Wilson left the Beach Boys to go form The Eagles.
They could have done greater things.

The clue is in the classic Eagles song : 'Boys of Summer'

A throwback to his previous group 'The Beach Boys', i.e. when would beach boys be on the beach? In the Summer. So perhaps the song title should have been (Beach) Boys of Summer.

Great album and heat added.

Is this the only album cover to feature a goat on the cover?

I'll be there on Saturday 17th! Can't wait! Sadly from what I saw on Jools it looks like Brian's last ever UK tour!

No, not the 60s version with the Beach Boys on it.

Not quite the same with an old Brian Wilson that can't hit the high notes and some random backing singers.

It's a weird album anyway and it was unfinished but there's some nice bootleg versions out there, it'll be good to get a supposedly definitive official release.

Back to Pet Sounds, as Boz confirms this is the stereo version i'd say it's essential, i never play the mono version anyway.

Been yonks since I saw BW in concert (his UK SMiLE tour) - in Brimingham - really looking forward to this one. Hoping to bump into some friends I made during that last trip.

Thanks for the extensive (and heartfelt) response, but I can't say you have converted me. I always thought "God Only Knows" was one of those awful AOR ballads like the loathesome "Wonderful Tonight", only not nearly as horrific as the latter.
