Simply on of the best albums of all time. Kinda their answer to Sgt Peppers and in many many ways it's better than Sgt Peppers.

If you like this, check out Brian Wilson's 'Smile' CD which is a nice compliment to this.

This is an album I've always meant to buy but never got round to. I'm sure I read at somepoint that this album was part of the inspiration behind sgt peppers. Anyone heard of this or is it one of they "wiki facts"? LOL.
#11
According to music expert Andrew Wedge from the HUKD label, it was more in response to, than the inspiration for, Sergeant Pepper. I read that a while back in reply #1. :D

LOL, I read that too but was unsure of it's accuracy. An expert is an expert though so I shall know my place.

In this case an expert is also a moderator and we should all accept our place!

(sorry Andy - he does tend to know his stuff from what I've seen, our Wedgo!)

Point taken, probably best not to mention then that pet sounds was released a year before sgt pepper.
#15
Does it matter that this is mono not stereo?

As best as I can remember, Brian Wilson was justifiably proud of this album, considering it his meisterwork. Until, some weeks after the release of Pet Sounds, he was handed an acetate copy of Sgt Pepper. After having listened to it, he was apparently so "knocked out" that he became withdrawn and reclusive for some time, being of the opinion that the Beatles had beaten his magum opus, and with seeming ease. And if it wasn't the middle of the night I could have probably said that using half the words!

Morning Andy and co!

You're all close but no cigar... It was actually Rubber Soul that got Brian Wilson started on this album, and in turn Pet Sounds got McCartney inspired to record Sgt Pepper : )

The reclusive period after hearing Sgt Pepper was to do with the (30 or 40 year!) delayed completion and release of Smile

Wikipedia
Beatles producer George Martin stated that "Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened... Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds."
