Snap
Pros : -
Up-scaling of all devices to 1080p if required. (including component and most other older connections)
Real switching using remote and sound switch's with it
Volume and switching devices on one remote - removes need for TV remote. (Sky remote can control amp volume also (Onkyo)
Added benefit of Surround sound if wanted
No need to worry about these hit and miss cheap switch's
Cons :-
Cost of an amp. (but as I said anyone hitting that number of devices would be taking things seriously and so should be thinking about an amp)
Shame these cannot be reversed I want 1 in 2 out to get an hdmi from the amp to another room. (active are a lot more dough)

I agree - especially if you do a bit of research into connecting various devices (e.g. xbox360 can only output 5.1 over optical).
I have a PC, PS3, Xbox360, Viewsonic VMP74 all running through my Onkyo A/V Reciever with 5.1 REAL surround (i.e. in PS3/360 games, you can actually tell exactly what direction gunfire/explosions/etc come from which really helps in FPS games like COD).
Forget cheap switches, get a proper receiver!
