These are 3 year old models so I suspect they have been well used by businesses and now being sold as refurbs when they should really be classed as used

I agree - I thought I was buying an A1 grade refurb. What I got was a second-hand laptop.

What kind of condition are we talking here? I've never had a refurb before, but the only negative with mine is a good set of scratches on the laptop's back, but the material doesn't lend itself well to resisting scratches by the looks of it.

Mine had a few marks, especially on the corners. The frequently used keys were all quite smooth and the trackpad was shiny. It wasn't in bad condition at all, but having bought Grade A1 refurbished laptops before, I was expecting professional manufactured refurbishment, which is what I took A1 to mean. In fairness, the listing didn't say that this was what was meant, but I just simply felt that I'd been sold a second-hand laptop rather than a refurbished one. The distinction might be a fine one, but I feel the ad should say second-hand rather than refurbished. The actual refurbishment looked as if it comprised a reinstall of Win 7 with MOST but not all drivers installed, and some free software added (AVG, FIrefox). No back up media, and no means of creating back up media, and the battery looked as if it was retaining about 60% of its charge, so actually not brilliant.

All that said, it's a lot of laptop for the money, and if you are looking for a second-hand laptop of this standard, I think it's a good buy. I was in two minds about it and (especially having paid £26 with ParcelForce to send it back) was in two minds about keeping it.

I bought this machine 5 years ago as it had a rep of not being buggy like a lot of PVR's at the time......,Paid £200, still works fine, never fails to record or gone wrong in any way.

Pretty much the same for me, but this has been my least used PVR because of the noisy fan.

Yes, I'd read quite a few comments on AV Forum about the noisy fan, but I never hear the fan on mine.

Does this act like a wireless aerial device? I just bought a new tv (thanks to here!) and don't have an aerial connection in my room, I'd like something like this so that I can use the tv for more than just mirroring my laptop screen!

In fact I would love to upgrade to a 2tb hard drive, but I have no idea how to do it:(

If you really want to upgrade your HDD I think it is straight forward swap. Apparently the DS will take a 2TB drive - Partition and format it in just a few seconds - all ready for use. Ask the question over on AVforums & I'm sure you will receive all the help you need. http://www.avforums.com/threads/digital-stream-dhr-8203-5u-hd-pvr-master-thread-part-twelve.1686714/page-31 very helpful & long thread for the Digital Stream.

What Hi Fi reveiw http://www.whathifi.com/forum/freesat-sky-and-virgin/freeview-hd-pvr-digital-stream-dhr8205u

AV Forums very long thread http://www.avforums.com/threads/digital-stream-dhr-8203-5u-hd-pvr-master-thread-part-one.1253846/

The only problems I have had is with the box locking up occasionally & requires re-boot (less so with the front panel disabled "dark micom in updates") but never missed a recording. :)

What is the dark Micom you mentioned?

Sorry only just seen your post.
Dark Micom is an update that disables the touch panel on the front of the box. I had trouble with the box locking up initially when starting & AV Forums suggested this update provided by the manufacturer. Disabling the touch panel with this update worked for me & as I never used the touch panel it was not a problem. Not everyone experienced this minor problem though.
Hope that answers your question?

I ordered at higher price so ordered another at lower and tried to cancel first but they were so quick to despatch that now I've got 2 of the bleeding things. I'll stick one in FS unless anyone PM's me, £95 to cover postage by courier on top
You should be able to return the more expensive one to Amazon - can use DSR rights at minimum but Amazon probably go further than that. I have certainly returned something I'd bought from them a few months ago - simple process and they even provided a printable return label with postage paid so I'd had free delivery and free return plus full refund of cost - not bad considering it was a £3 HDMI cable and I'd confused mini and micro!

I'm seeing no problems with this laptop, should deserve heat at that price with those specs!!
Nobody should be buying machines of this power with 768p screens. Leave that resolution to the absolute budget market.
Duplicate, Linkage.
I'd say a very good price
dobo
I'd like to see a 900p/1080p screen at this price, and I don't think this model does.
Screen resolution is a 1366 pixels by 768 pixels by default, with the additional option of an HDMI port, so you can output to your TV in HD.
