I questioned the radio station Plant Rock on a similar issue. It seems that modern pop (to me) Genesis sold more records than older rock Genesis, therefore as Genesis is considered a rock band, anything they record is regarded as rock by the money men, and the one that makes the most money is elevated to 'anthem' status. I'm not sure how Robert Palmer gets on there though, not being remotely rock. Therefore if Led Zeppelin had recorded The Birdie Song, it would also have been a rock anthem.
