I've always wanted a workstand but can never bring myself to part with such a large wad of cash for one.

To be honest this doesn't sound particularyly cheap, Not the same brand, but I picked up one at decathlon for a third of this.

I actually bought one of these earlier. £135 at most other places. It was either this or a Tacx Cycle Spider Team which is similar but has a a tool tray. Cheapest I found the Tacx for was £85.

So with the £5 voucher (which I believe is personally issued if you haven't bought something from them in a while) it was a good buy for me. But then I have 2 MTBS to maintain and a brand new race bike to build. Build would have cost me £50 so I have preferred to put that towards a good stand and do it myself.

I vote hot but many people will vote cold as probably don't spend this much on a bike or maintain it.

He probably means this:

Does not look anywhere near as good but then if someone sees a full suspension bike in Tesco or Argos for £99. How can you explain how one by Trek, Specialized, Kona etc is better at £999?

As with anything you get what you pay for and with tools, its not worth buying cheap as either the tool breaks or what you were using it on does.

Thanks for making assumptions, can I help you onto your high horse?

Actually it was this:-

http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/bike-workstand-53433343/

Obviously gone back up in price (it was a while ago, but I've seen it the same price twice since), but still cheaper.

+'s (other than price)

The main one for me was that you don't have to take off wheels to use it, never been a fan of those, but that is personal preference.

Solid as you like. I've it holding bikes while I've removed siezed on pedals and it was like a rock.

-ve's it's not light, the OP one looks like its been aimed at the race market (IE to take with you to events to set up / fix problems there). This one is most certainly a home stand.

Odd comments from Matty as I normally get accused of snubbing the £50 bike specials and labled as a bike snob & here it is I'm getting stick for the complete opposite.

I left it off my original post as I thought it was a little patronising, but I'll add it here...

This is a good price for a specific make of a niche product, but for most those looking for a non portable workstand there's far better value out there.

An alternative workstand is this one, which at £14.20 is quite a bit cheaper. I have no experience of using it and I agree with the comments that with tools like this, you pretty much get what you pay for.

The stand you posted was a very good buy then.

And my comments were not directed to you, more the majority of people on here who usually state that a bike is not worth the money when it is a proper bike and not a supermarket special, yet will purchase every gadget on here regardless of whether good or needed just becase it is an alleged bargain.

Or trawl around every shop of a retailer trying to find something because someone may have posted that they got something at a stupid price, sometimes the only one is existence or a rare find.... Or an out of date find.... Buying something at a good price weeks or months ago cannot be used a reason why something else is not a good buy when that offer is unavailable. Unless time travel has been invented yet :-D

Back to the stand. Great if you don't want to clamp a seat tube or a frame tube which is important if you have thin walled aluminium or carbon fibre. Front or rear can be clamped depending on what part of the bike you are working on. Height adjustable and rotates 360 degrees. I'm purchasing for a road bike but it will also service my mountain bikes.

Second hand turbo trainers apparently make good workstands also.
