Kula looks good*. Recon fork should actually work. it's frame only around that price at some sites :o. not sure if it was worth £1000 though (may have been, just not familiar with the market)
sensible sizes available too, amazingly.

*I don't mean i like the colour scheme, but the spec looks good.
Kona have done an amazing job of making expensive bikes look cheap. Stinky in particular :p they probably ride fine though (any reviews?)

Yeah Kula frame is a belter, its the pick of the deal IMO:thumbsup:

All the ALU hardtails in the range use a certain frame until you get to the Kula which uses the better & lighter frame (good enough for CC racing if people ever get that fit lol)

TBH the photo of the Stinky doesn't do it any justice. I Used to ride a Stinky Dee Lux when it was more of an alrounder, nowadays the stinky seems more of a hardcore freeride/downhill/jump bike.

only thing i can see wrong with these (other than the colours, which I know is personal) is the wheels aren't great (rims), and the finishing parts (stems, BBs etc.) aren't very nice either. that's not so important especially as you'll probably end of changing them. but these bikes look like some real bargains especially at this time of year (near start of season).
there's always the issue of not being able to ride before you buy online though.
I would consider an 18" Dawg if i had the spare cash.

Me and the Mrs are toying with getting one of each of the Kula's (2008&2009). The spec is easily better than we need, but would rather have the better frame for the same price as this years mid range models. (I would probably change the tyres to semi-slick for the kind of riding we will be doing). We have a big Kona dealer nearby so we can easily pop up to have a demo, though they only have 2010 models the frames haven't changed. I always find Kona frame geometry very comfortable.

Kula looks solid and you have all sizes covered using both years.
only things i question are FSA bottom bracket (don't last long in mud)
M505 pedals (you may not want them)

around that price you'd get from wiggle e.g. Focus Fat Boy, GT Avalanche 1.0, neither have fork near as good and other parts neither.

Recon is a good single air fork, nearly £200 on its own. (one below the Reba i think, which i use).
Toras are mostly coil, not nearly as good, especially for lighter riders.

so effectively you're paying for good frame and fork and not much for the rest of the bike. which is why i still think it's a good deal, if they suit you.

Have a ride on a hardtail Boardman comp. The frame is one of the best I've ridden under £1500, it's a lovely bike and it impresses me every time I ride it. Only drawback is having to deal with the numpty's at Halfords, but that's a small price to pay for such a good bike.

wowzers, those boardman bikes (stupid name) do look really good for the money.. the one above that is ElixirR/Reba for £849.

here's the comparable one though:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_502037_langId_-1_categoryId_229915#dtab

can't believe what you can get for under a grand now. higher end prices have gone up last two years so wonder how they do this..
