We're as sceptical of nostalgia as the next person, but when we heard that some bright spark was bringing back the legendary Big Trak, we were reduced to giddy puddles of pre-adolescent excitement. Big Trak, if you don't remember, was an amazingly cool-looking 6-wheeled tank that you could programme yourself to move around and fire its photon beam. Happily, not much has changed with this new version, which means you can not only relive the fun you had as a kid but, if you've got kids of your own, pass it on through the family.

But why is it so cool, you must logically be wondering? Well, we'll tell you. A few simple instructions can make your Big Trak go forward a certain number of lengths, fire, and then come back to you, which is rather nice in itself - but imagine how complex you can make it. The onboard memory will store up to 16 commands in one go, which means you can easily have your faithful tank-servant completing some complex manoeuvres and lasering the cat in no time.

Ultimately, though, it all comes back to how flippin' cool it looks. It comes with all the necessary black/red/yellow stickers that made the original so 80s-tastic, and the whole thing is lovingly based on the original's contours. It's so convincing that you simply won't be able to tell the difference. So whether you're teaching your offspring how to grow up cool (definitely NOT nerdy) or simply reliving a slice of your own childhood, Big Trak is here to move forward 6 lengths, pause, turn 40 degrees, fire photons and bump into the fridge because you miscalculated.

They could have upgraded the CPU :( I have seen hackers making loads of upgrades for the original. Would be cool to get one with a modern internal specification.

The code doesn't work. Not much of a bargain.

I agree, with the robot stuff you can get now like stuff that you can connect to android/iphone OS's etc you would of thought they would have made this look retro but have some decent kit inside it.

So does the code work or not ? As i am really really tempted :)

DONT DO IT!!!!!!!! You will wreck all of your childhood memories! Its like digging out your Megadrive to play Altered Beast 'cos you spent ages on it as a kid, some things are just better left as "good memories" rather than "crap reality" :p

Oh happy days!

Part of the joy of my Big Trak is that it was so crappy and horribly unpredictable.

Why on earth would you want an upgraded CPU - it may make the thing work well!.

Sends a shiver down me spine!

I'm off to reminisce - remember spangles....etc.....etc.............

Mine had a trailer when I was a kid. ;)

I work on active military robots that use less powerful CPUs than big tracks, scary but true!

Damn ... I'm still after a BigTrak Jr, I think it features an upgraded CPU, storable programs and extra addons like cameras and a missile launcher!

Though it didn't far as well in a head to head http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/35237/bigtrak-vs-bigtrak-jr-challenge:D
