I believe you have to insure the bike yourself. If you don't bother and it gets nicked you still have to pay the monthly fee etc, which is something to bear in mind.
This also raises an interesting question:
If you had this set up on a 18 month contract and it got nicked a couple of months before the end of the contract and the insurance company paid up for a new replacement bike, how would this affect the valuation of the bike? It's basically a brand new bike.
Anyway it's good idea. Personally I think the government should be offering bigger incentives to encourage more people to cycle/walk to work but it's a start.

Anyway, back to the cyclescheme stuff - a hot tip I'll share with you all...I've taken great care to use my new bike on the roughest trails I can find - by the time my year's up, the market value of the bike is going to be *very little* ;-) :-D

Market value is generally considered to be 1 months payment regardless of how much you've hammered the bike.

On a more serious note I cycled from John O'Groats to Edinburgh a few years back and the cars that drove closest to me were the foreign cars. Do you know why? They were left hand drive and it's much easier for them to judge the correct distance between the car and my bike. If a car's offside had missed me by a few inches then I would have been more worried.

Speaking both as a driver and a cyclist, I'm deeply worried that anyone thinks a few inches is the "correct" distance between a car and a bike.

ETA: A note on the OP too...why not consider supporting sustrans? Because their website is *the worst* in the world and no use to anyone...that's why not :-D
It's usually called a salary sacrifice. Your gross pay remains the same, but the deduction is made before Tax and NI. Therefore the amount of Tax and NI you pay is less.

It's the same for childcare vouchers. Have a look here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/specialist/salary_sacrifice.pdf
I thought this was a ran as an effective salary reduction. I.e. youre paid less. Therefore your NI Tax and Pension contributions are less. Also I understood that by agreeing to a salary reduction, your employer is not obliged to return your salary to the previous level.
Is this true?

very sceptical about this scheme they bump the price of the bikes up, and then discount them pretending it'sa great deal. suprised so many people are falling for it.

I bought my bike at my local store at the price in the shop, a good deal it was too !!

Its a scheme run by your employer.... you will need to get them to sign up first. As per my previous posts 'Deals' like this just frustrate people... Interesting to know how many people actually benefit from this Post!

Reading the previous posts I would reckon a great deal more people would benefit from this post than from many other mediocre posts this site.

This is really a hot deal !!

> or a £1000 bike (the absolute max price)

My company allows us to get up to £1500 (pre-tax) of vouchers.

If your company applies for a consumer credit license they can increase the amount accordingly. Unlikely any will do this for this scheme, but they might have one already if they lend to the public.
