'I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out' Bill Hicks could have been on all the chat shows. He could have had his own show on prime time. He could have got rich and fat and frightened. But Hicks didn't go the easy way. He turned down the offers Satan made him. Instead he figured out his best shot at truth and then he said it. He attacked the lies that justified and prettified the carnage of the First Gulf War. He attacked the easy surrender of art to commerce, the demeaning cynicism of the marketing culture and the preposterous power of the mainstream media to confuse and corrupt. This is the first collection of all his stand-up routines, with extracts from his diaries, notebooks, letters and final writings. It reveals Hicks' work as both brilliant conventional stand-up comedy and as more interesting and dangerous: an invitation to a life lived without fear.

Excellent! Ordered!
Hot, thanks.
Brillant comedian - died young like all the best
Being pulled over by the cops whilst on Acid... probably my favourite routine of all time. This man is a legend, if you dont 'get' Bill you have a lazy brain. Or your name is pizza delivery boy junior.
Thanks, my boyfriend loves Bill HIcks, this will be a nice little surprise present.
Prophet. Should be taught in schools
Have to agree with rehydrated - kids would learn more useful stuff studying Bill Hicks than all the current curriculum
"Back in stock in 3 weeks"

Bah! Shame, the man was a genius.
excellent book! though any hicks fan should have it already - shame shame!
So is this autobiographical, a collection of odds and ends or what? Official/unofficial????
My Bill Hicks tshirt helps me make friends.
It's a collection of his gig transcripts, interviews and life story.

It's worth a buy. Bought a copy of Ebay a while back. I'll be keeping this one.

It can get a bit tedious towards the end, as some of the jokes are rehashed over and over.
Amen to that --Bill Hicks is one of the only people I felt genuine sadness for when he died ...Heat added and rep for informing others of his genuis...
'Your a Christian , forgive me..'
'Instead of spending billions on warfare ....feed every person on the planet ...which would be easily done ..then use the rest to explore outer space......'you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one...'

Maybe one day Bill's dreams will be realised
Nice find.
its just a ride!
I was fortunate enough to hear him perform twice. The first time was by chance as I’d never heard of him and he was playing as part of a double bill on Shaftesbury Avenue; he did come on last. :-D
Stumbling upon someone that good by chance probably made the impact of that first gig all the more as I had no reference point. It’s a bit like walking into a local pub and hearing a world class band that you’d never heard of.

Repped and ordered.
awesome stand up - his routine was copied by Dennis Leary i believe:roll:
he was copied by Denis Leary, they were on the same circuit and Leary robbed a lot of material shameful, this guy is a genius definately should be taught in school and well worth a few quid just for the philosophy
I wonder if Stewart Lee has bought a copy? ;-)

Not a Carlin fan then?

The world is like a ride at an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think that it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly coloured, and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question - is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us. They say 'Hey! Don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride.' And we...kill those people. Ha ha ha. 'Shut him up! We have a lot invested in this ride. SHUT HIM UP! Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and family. This just has to be real.' It's just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. But it doesn't matter because: it's just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings, and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourselves off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here's what you can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defence each year, and instead spend it feeding, clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, for ever, in peace.

Bill Hicks on Denis Leary: "I have a scoop for you. I stole his (Leary's) act. I camouflaged it with punchlines, and to really throw people off, I did it before he did"
Like Carlin - forgot that he made a good age - Agree with his comment about growing old
Once you are too old to wipe your own ???? it is time to move on - lot of truth in that.
excellent, heat and rep and ordered..
the guy is a legend told it like it is him and george carlin are defo gods amongst the stand ups, he makes me laugh thinking about his acts and the book looks a great laff too cheers
Picked this up for £3 in store in Swansea the other day, well worth the money. Also got American Scream - The Bill Hicks Story for £3 and Agent of Evolution for £5. Worth having a look in the books section if your HMV has one, there always seem to be some good books on the cheap.
I'd say for anybody who was a fan, it's also worth checking out David Cross, possibly the greatest living stand-up at the moment.
"Ohh Were the puppet people.... put it on our TV its true, put it on our TV its true."

Voted hot, lovely book but lost my copy ages ago en route to Prague, any Hicks lovers see Doug Stanhope

Second that completely. David Cross is excellent though it seems like it has been a while since he has had anything new out - but he has a book coming out in August HERE.

Beyond the material, the main draw of Hicks (and Cross) for me is the actual performance... they are like song writers in a way in that you can listen to their stuff repeatedly and not get tired of it. I have both Hicks and Cross in my iTunes playlist and they just slot right in there amongst the songs.
What the hi diddly ho's going on?

Just as a footnote, Kevin Booth, longtime friend of Bill wrote a class bio, Agent of Evolution, I bought a signed copy from his store a while back....extremely funny/sad and I would recommend it..

Just in case anyone was interested

Finally got my copy today, bargain at £3
One of my favourite books. Red hot.

Mine came yesterday and by coincidence I watched Denis Leary’s No Cure for Cancer DVD last night. I’d heard that he’d copied Hicks but was amazed at how much he had in terms of style, delivery, content etc.

I started reading the Foreword and it turns out that the Hicks’s gig back in November 1990 that I went to was his first in the UK which I’d always wondered about. Right place, right time. :)
dennis leary is brilliant but yeah i agree he's copied bill hicks a lot.

You actullay seen bill hicks live?!! excellent! wish i had, not going to get the chance now either

If I’d never seen Hicks’s work I’d probably find Leary funnier than I do. I don’t find him that good and his derivative style knocks him back a notch or two for me.

You actually seen bill hicks live?!! excellent! wish i had, not going to get the chance now either

I’d never heard of him though so it was a complete surprise. To hear him for the first time live without knowing his work was such a shock. The next day I had pains in my stomach muscles from laughing so much. I guess things can hit you more when you have no expectation as it’s so fresh.
