Product Description
'By the way, if anyone here is in advertising or marketing, kill yourself. Kill yourselves, seriously. You're the ruiner of all things good. Seriously, no, this is not a joke. "There's gonna be a joke coming..." There's no ******* joke coming, you are Satan's spawn, filling the world with bile and garbage, you are ****** and you are ******* us, kill yourselves, it's the only way to save your ******* soul. Kill yourself, kill yourself, kill yourself now. Now, back to the show.' Bill Hicks could have been on all the chat shows. He could have had his own show on prime time. He could have got rich and fat and frightened. But Hicks didn't go the easy way (give or take the occasional dick joke). He turned down every offer Satan made him. Instead he figured out his best shot at the truth and then he said it. He attacked the lies that justified and prettified the carnage of the First Gulf War. He attacked the easy surrender of art to commerce, the demeaning cynicism of the marketing culture and the preposterous power of the mainstream media to confuse and corrupt.

About the Author
Bill Hicks died on February 26th, 1994. This is the first collection of all his stand-up routines, diaries and notebooks, letters and final writings. Here we can trace the evolution of Hicks' work from brilliant conventional stand-up into something far more interesting and dangerous: an open invitation to a life lived without fear.

Eve
You can dip in and out of this book whenever you need cheering up.

John Cleese
'Savage, brilliant,funny, tremendously intelligent.'

Morning Star
"Hicks has steadily gained greater recognition since his death. We need more like him."

Independent on Sunday
"This isn't an opinion, this is a statement of fact: Hicks is a genius."

Independent on Sunday
"Hicks wasn't afraid to tell it as it was, and for that alone he should be rememebered."

I have a tatty old copy of this book.

At this price, might be worth replacing.

Legendary comedian btw.

RIP Bill. What a genius.
Will pick up a copy later...nice find.

For those that have never heard of him, try listening to some of his stuff such as Rant in E minor, and One Night Stand (some on youtube). You can tell how the comedians of today were influenced by him, as he himeself was by the great Lenny Bruce

The most intelligent stand-up comedian of all time. If you haven't got this book, get it.

A legend. Funniest comedian I have ever seen (Brighton Centre c.1990).

Jasper Carrot's good, eh Matt?

People either love him or hate him. I usually find that people with a good sense of humor love him...
#13
Overated?? Are you crazy?

Bill Hicks is an absolute legend....
It wasn't just the comedy factor, it was all the philosophy he laced into his material, he truly was ahead of his time.

I am guessing Mattcafc is a fairly shallow person, as Bill Hicks works on a deeper, more meaningful level than most comedians and I predict he's a fan of one-liners such as Jimmy Carr.

Excellent book - thank you.

I actually agree that it's cool to like comedians like Hicks, Carlin and Bruce (who I would guess 75% of people who profess to like him have never heard anything by him).

But it's probably cooler now to say you don't like him, like you are now.

It's funny how 'cool' works.

Retarded reply of the day award? If you'd even bother to look at his material and his life in fact you'd see how wrong you are. I'm not going to preach as everyones entitled t their own opinion, but Bill Hicks is by no means a 'cool' band wagon everyone jumps on to be popular. He's one of the few great comedians who will change your life and make you laugh whilst doing it.

Evolution not revolution - we want our thumbs!!!!

Legend.

(don't care for Carlin though personally)
#18
i must agree while hicks was good he was very overrated but folk will like who they like

personally i think dennis leary is hilarious(waits for the stolen act flames)

Love Hicks, Mitch Hedberg is another great comic, sadly no longer with us anymore.

I think Dane Cook is really funny also, which seems to be a really uncool thing to say, but it's not about being cool. It's about recognising a really good comic when you see one.

Like most dead celebrities, Hicks' continued fame is most likely due to the fact that he's not around to reveal how mediocre he really was. Death is always good for sales and reputation:whistling:

Most overated comedian of all time. Seems its 'cool' to like him.

The first time I saw him perform was in 1990 and I had never heard of him but I intuitively knew that in 20+ years time it would be cool to like him so I forced myself to laugh even though I thought he was unfunny just so that I could pretend to be cool because it’s so cool to pretend to be cool!!!!
If you personably don’t like him then that’s cool; makes no difference to me or Bill Hicks for that matter.

And the Beatles are crap and Oasis are the best band in the world.
I don’t mind Leary, but if he only hard a heart…

Hick’s wasn’t even close to being a celebrity though.
Would Hicks be held in such high esteem if he hadn’t died? Probably not but who knows how he would have developed as a comedian.
I thought he was superb at what he did but I don’t have illusions that he would have redefined comedy if only he had lived. He ploughed his own comedy furrow with as much wit, humanity and honesty as the best of them. That was good enough for me and he gave me one of the best nights of my life for which I’m thankful.

I loved his skit about why aren’t there positive drugs stories on the news. The news is supposed to be objective so why not have balanced reporting:

‘Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here’s Tom with the weather.’

Seems like its the same kind of closed minded people who can't appreciate Hicks's diverse and sometimes contraversial comedy who mess up the threads like this.

I couldn't give a monkeys what your opinion is on Hicks...This is a good deal and there are plenty of people out there who regard him as the best comedian who has ever lived, so live and let live!!!

Things will change one day when we finally realise we're all one conciousness! :)

Rather than taking the time in telling us that you dislike Bill Hicks, which no one cares about anyway, why not do something constructive and tell us the names of some good comedians in your opinion. Or are you just a hater?

As for the overrated tag he was very highly regarded by his peers as this comedians' comedian poll shows.

Have to say your comment about bill hicks being outdated is a bit daft - he died years ago!
