I've only seen solvent cartridges for the more popular printer types and brands. The Windolene method has worked on all the popular printers with varying amounts of success. Some printers need a few applications but most of the time it works.

It's unfortunate that the OEM inks cost so much, but the reality is that the manufacturers sell the printers so cheaply they make their money on the inks.

Expect that the heads of the printer will clog up more easily with compatible inks...

That said you can reduce the chance of it happening by printing at least every week. If the heads do block you can get around it by using cleaning cartridges that are filled with a cleaning solvent instead of ink.

A more 'ghetto' way is to soak the inkpad with Windolene and do a head clean and leave it for 24 hours. The chemicals in the popular window cleaner will unblock the heads - more often than not.

We have just got a cheap Canon refurb for £15 delivered. Found a refill kit on ebay for about the same price so will use compatibles with that and see how we go. Will use genuine Epson inks in our 'expensive' printer and only print the best shots with that. We have gone months between prints with the Epson & OEM.

Does your advice apply to all inkjets or certain manufacturers?

Looking for a cheap inkjet (sub £20) to run on compatibles for cheap photoprints...so that if it blocks terminally no big loss. Any pointers? I only know epson heads are part of the printer so if they block its bye bye printer.
