New scheme from Birmingham City Council, couldnt find a post on here already but I went for my first session today and was surprised how simple it was! I registered online at the Birmingham Council website for the Leisure card which is already free of charge. They emailed a reference number and I collected the card from the gym! Easy enough. Hours aren't ideal, but if you are an early morning or afternoon gym user then its ideal. Includes studio classes provided that your still in the centre before 4pm (e.g. after speaking to a trainer today, I can get to the gym for 3.55pm, use the pool and then attend a class around 5pm as Im already scanned onto the system!)

Taken from the website:

Birmingham City Council, in partnership with the NHS, is now offering all Birmingham residents* free swimming, group exercise classes and gym sessions.

To join the scheme you'll need a Leisure Card. Just complete an application form and take it to your local centre along with two documents which show your name and address.

*Birmingham residents pay council tax to Birmingham City Council. Non-Birmingham residents aged over 60 or under 17 can still swim for free.

What is included?

Group fitness classes (before 5pm Mon-Fri, after 1pm weekends)
Fitness gyms** (before 5pm Mon-Fri, after 1pm weekends)
Fitness gym inductions (times as above)
Swimming at all times during casual public sessions
ICE Youth gyms** (8-16 yr-olds only, during normal public opening hours)
**except the cardio and ICE Youth gyms at Northfield Pool and Fitness Centre

Please note Powerpoint (free weights) gyms and sports hall hire are not included in the scheme.

The scheme runs until March 31 2011.

#3
Birmingham got the highest Obesity records or something?? lol..

Just wondering how many people actually pay their council tax and can still get to the gym Monday to Friday before 5??? Nice if you are not too busy earning money to pay your council tax to use it !;-)
#5
yea people who work for a living and dont sit on there fat ass at home can't make use of this.

however all the free loaders who get all the benifits get even more for nothing

good deal but aimed at wrong people

People who don't work weekends?
People who don't work every weekday?
People who finish before 5pm on a weekday?
People who work from home?
People who live with someone who works (i.e. housewife etc.)?
People on holiday from work?

Quite a few I'd imagine.

Well if my council offered this, I'd certainly take it up - I don't work (am a housewife), but my husband does, so we don't claim a bean in benefits and we certainly DO pay our council tax!!
Still, I kind of get your point, it would be better if they offered peak hours too...

Thanks for getting my point Cazd.....It would be nice if your husband could benefit (play on words ;-) ) you could even go together!!

I work full time, however due to flexi-time, I will be able to get to the gym most mornings (my local open at 6.30am) and I finish early on Fridays so I can easily be there before 4pm. Peak hours would be ideal but I guess their trying to fill off peak times. Obviously the leisure card will get you the same access to any other local council run gym, of which there are many in Birmingham.

As someone who used to work for a fitness chain, the equipment is exactly the same and the cleanliness etc was actually cleaner. I certainly plan to make use of it, just felt that it hasnt been very well publicised. I know the hours are restricted, but even if you only go at weekends, its still something.
#10
Thanx for posting, had heard about this before but wasn't shaw how to apply! Cheers!
#11
is it only selected gyms in Birmingham?
#12
i don't believe this is for tax payers only.
I went there and signed up, and i'm a part time student and don't pay anything... unless its under my family, but all they wanted was my leasure card and a bank statement

Yes but doing it this way makes it more likley that those people you scorn will become more active, socially motivated and happy long term, more likley to be Council Tax payers!
Also, it probably bangs better for your council tax buck  since an NHS subsidy will be involved to pay the same people to do the same job, but with more patrons during the day, money the council would otherwise not have!...

Then comes the ripple effect when 'some' of them invite family and/or friends...:whistling:

Too many freeloaders in this country, equally among all ethnic groups skin colour does not come into it. I have always worked and never claimed a single penny. I do not like how the free loaders are encouraged and the tax payer is lumbered. Too many people hiding behind simple things instead of bieng honest and getting a days work in. I go to work ever day including weekends. In my street I have seen all types of freeloaders not doing a bean. The problem lies in the way the govt allows this sort of thing to go on without the proper checks etc. I am of asian background and my experience shows that this sort of thing happens in all people regardless of skin colour or ethnic background :)

encouraged to be active, get out their 'dwellings' interact with people and keep fit?! what has the rest of your spiell got to do with this offer?

Excellent deal - my only gripe is that I work for Birmingham City Council and we have now been told there are to be at least 800 redundancies. Say no more.

Give him a prize you have always worked so what i always worked 60+ hours a week the tax man would take £200+ some weeks but now I'm disabled they don't want to know. My boss had no insurance 2 years down the line the solicitors are about to get the money and ask for him to surrender all this financials only to find out theres no money in his company. Hes ran the company for 30 years and is still running it now as hes moved it into other accounts and made the company limited. He did this so i wouldn't get a thing and you cant take what he doesn't have even though he has a new range rover every 3 years and has 6 foreign holidays a year hes a taxpayer.

In your twisted world and some of the other poster on this thread anyone who doesn't work no matter what the reason, is a scumbag so if that's the case what does that make my boss. You say you have never claimed a thing i would be interested to know how old you are as I'm betting early twenties so that is no big deal in itself your banging on like we owe you something because you have never claimed a penny. I have asian friends who have never claimed a thing either and the reason for that is there family own businesses so they walk straight into cushy jobs, or they spend 5 years at Uni when they leave school which still makes them scrounger because who supports them? the taxpayer.

The reason this country is being bleed dry is by people who have no right being here who have got in and claimed asylum here and are screwing the government out of every penny they can.Not mentioning the race but its more than one i I'm not counting everyone of the race as scumbags unlike some posters i dont tar everyone with the same brush its just the few. When i go shopping and am counting the pennies as we barely have enough to live on i see these people walking around the store in £150 trainer talking into there Apple iPhone stuff that most working folk see as luxury's and there's me someone who by no fault of there own cant even afford to put £10 credit on my 2 year old phone and struggles for everything. It make me sick and the hypocrites in here just make my blood boil you are all high and mighty but one day you will need some help from the state which will put you in the class of people you think your better than then lets see if you still spout such ***** then.

Its the way this crazy country is going, councils looking at how to secure votes rather than jobs.

So in your world anyone who's made redundant in Birmingham is also a scumbag because there are very few jobs and they will sign on while looking for another jog hence freeloader...

Maybe you should word your comments better instead of implying that anyone who lives in the Birmingham area and doesn't work no matter what the reason is a free loading scumbag. If you want to get you tax back get a good job instead of tossing burgers in McDonalds then you might get a few quid back.

I dont class myself as a free loader you made that distinction with all the £10,000 i paid in tax the way i see it is that Iv'e paid more than enough in to warrant taking something back when i can barly walk and have no choice in the matter but no longer work.

Ive got no issues with someone paying in to the system getting something back, thats what its there for.

But you have got to agree 90% of peope taking up this offer can work but dont want to, why should you want to work if your being offered a nice council house, free dental and medical care, free lesuire activities and money for fags and booze.
Any what have they got to do in return? go and sign on every couple weeks

I agree get the lazy sods back to work or they will get nothing, genuine people that actually deserve benefits are no problem. The social security system was setup with a different purpose and now its being mis-used. All the noise about aslum seekers is another load of rubbish, majority of people claiming are of british origin. Polly69 you asked for my age I am in my forties and have to date paid taxed to the tune of thousands, I have the P60's to prove it. I have to recruite people and no one wants to know, the young girls get pregant and get a house and benefits why do they want to work !!. I am a honest hard working brtish citizien and get sick and tired of hearing the same old story all these migrants come here and take our jobs and houses etc this is not true just propaganda by the idiots who actually want to cause trouble. It makes my blood boil that I am subsidising lazy people and I have a right to me mad. As for your other claim Polly69 about asian businesses then please try to understand that these businesses were built up on pure hard work, the children you mention that go to uni are scroungers you say, what about all the taxes that their parents have paid. so please get your facts right before you start making sweeping statements and tarring people with the same brush,

Its for all centres that are council run, e.g. Stechford Cascades, Fox Hollies Centre, Cocks Moors, etc. You can use the link here http://www.leisure.birmingham.gov.uk/index.htm to find a centre or class near you.

On another note, I didnt mean for the post to become a slanging match. The scheme is aimed to provide everyone with the chance to get into shape without worrying about the costs of £30+ gym membership which despite working full time, I would rather go without paying! The assumption is made that if you are providing ID with a Birmingham address then your a tax payer. I guess its up to the council to then chase you up if you dont qualify.

Polly69 you appear to have enough anger for all of us. Only you have used strong words such as Scumbag and A****hole and expressed opinions about race and asylum. This was supposed to be about council tax funded gym membership!!. If you can barely walk then gym membership won't be your thing so why so much anger ? :?

lol i know mate

the council gyms have been free for EVERYBODY IN BIRMINGHAM WITH A BIRMINGHAM POSTCODE FOR OVER A YEAR!!!!!!!!

all you needed was proof of your address and some ID and you could ALL have been going to the gym whenever you wanted for 3 months, and they kept extending it aswell!!

i just renewed mine last week and i dont work for the council so i think its still working if not, all the people moaning on here simply missed out! as there was NO RESTRICTIONS on who could get the free membership all through this year.

http://www.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2008/11/28/gym-for-free-scheme-a-success-97319-22357702/

The link above shows it was only a pilot scheme for certain areas of Brum for the first year from 2008. It was only rolled out to ALL of Birmingham in September 2009. Its a heads up as many people havent been aware that its available to them. I wouldnt have been eligible before as I live South Birmingham and wouldnt want to have travelled across just to use a gym. My local gym were charging for the pulsepoint and to use all other facilities. The difference is that the scheme is now including all Birmingham centres, rather than the limited few.
#33
I've been part of this scheme for a while now, but admit I haven't gone too much.

However my new base is just around the corner from one of the participating leisure centres so I'll probably start using it at lunchtimes now. Ideal and hot from me!

Passport for Leisure card is free for certain people. Standard card is free....But, I thought standard card users needed to pay at the time of using any particular facility....Is that true or are facilities free to use within time restrictions?

Firstly, I pay my council tax and have done since it came into force, it makes me sick, that yourself and that other joker nexus boy have nothing better to do than spout your poison, there are a good many people who dont work and get everything thrown at them and theyre are the people like myself who have worked ever since i left school and do not get a penny off the government and i am betting i pay just as much out as you pair. Polly 69, even though you are disabled there is no reason why you should be penalised because you can no longer work and why should you not use the leisure facilitties, after all you HAVE been a taypayer!!! Its all just a case of sour grapes!! Only time will tell if you both are stil in a posistion to insult those genuine people who have been made redundant or injured at work, (both through no fault of their own). In the future, If the business that you are employed in doesnot go under with the economic struggle we have fell upon, It will be very interesting to see how it feel to be classed as a scrounger by small minded people, bearing in mind this could happen to anyone, you would be advised to remember that.:x

This person must have such a lack of inteligence or just extremely naive to think that it is that easy for 'freeloaders' to get to work, i am a very well educated person with an excellent work history, but since being layed off, have been out of work since february. i apply for anything and everything, but there is just not enough work out there. if 'nexusboy' would bother to watch the news he would realise this country is in a recession. Can i just add that, yes, race does come into it, as i've just been in my local shop, to have 2 asian girls completely ignore me and continue there conversation in whatever language they where speaking. my grandad and his dad fought and died to keep the great in britain but they may aswell have sat back and done what we do, and that is to let anyone into our country to rape our system and take english jobs away from english people. for nexusboy and the other oppinionated fool commenting on these arguements all i can think is that you are very young and have no life experience, or you are middle aged sad fat balding men, who fall aslep with a copy of razzle in there hand who have to post there poison on here because noone else will listen to them.
to polly69, i have payed enough into this system for both of us mate, you rape it for all its worth.

First Time poster from Wolverhampton, I am perfectly entitled to express my opinion about paying for a system that I am excluded from. Please do not bad mouth the tax payers that make life sweet for those that offer little. My original post asked why the tax payer was being asked to pay for facilities that they are deliberately excluded from. In fact if I wished to use such facilities I would be asked to pay again, as I cannot attend during the special free hours. Please do not vilify the taxpayer that supports your vision of the way forward. Someone has to pay for it ....why is it always us???

Perhaps rather than attending the Gym (when you cant walk) I would gladly use tax payers money to allow you to attend an english language course. Sentence construction would be money well spent.;-)
