Can anyone run anything above 100watt on these things without the engine running for a sustained period of time say 15+minutes.
#6
you can connect it straight to the battery to use without the engine running as far as im aware then it runs up to 400W

I know that, but plug something in that uses about 100watt let me know how long the car battery lasts.

Serious question as I've got a 300watt inverter that I took round europe to use with my laptop 230 watt max) and the low battery buzzer came on if I tried for any period of time.

I'd imagine it's not meant to be run for any length of time without the engine running, otherwise the battery would run down to a point where it might not start the engine.

What I thought, it's not like you can sit at a campsite with your engine running while you watch TV. Damn expensive! :whistling:

I just charged the battery while driving then used the laptop unplugged when I stopped.

yeah dont take out of the battery too much - i had to got the AA give me a jump start cos i used the battery for 20 mins to pump up and air bed and that drained it! :x

P.S. you cant bump start a Toyota Rav4 - pushed that stupid car round the field for ages before I worked that one out!

Yes, unless you have an extremely small capacity battery.

Even at 400W, it will pull about 33A
As a typical car battery is about 65Ah, you should easily be able to get about an hour (using about 50% of its capacity) from it before recharging. Of course at 100W it'll last almost 4 times as long.

Check the capacity of your battery.

A lot more than RAV4's a lot of cars wont' jump start now... I presume it's got to do with fuel injection, maybe someone with more technical knowledge will tell.

RAV4..... now that's a blast from my past, in the days when like most others I believed Toyota were reputable motors - until I nearly died on the 3rd day of owning it from new, and found it had faulty wheel alignment (all of them!) on top of a lot more faults, designed-in and build faults, none of which Toyota would acknowledge existed.
We all know better than to believe Toyota now though :whistling:

It sounds like your battery is on the way out. I'm surprised the AA guy didn't offer to measure it for you so he could flog you a new one.
But it needs to be fully charged to measure it correctly.

None in my area :-(

I was going to say, £29.99 in the first place seems a bit cheap?
Is this really 400w continuous or is it 400w burst?

If this is continuous, even at £30 it's an absolute bargain. The cheap equivalents are normally 40+

I think the idea is that you watch the TV while you drive!

It is rated as 400W continuous. http://www.blackanddecker.co.uk/automotive/productdetails/catno/BDV066/info/specifications/

Manual:

It's definitely a good buy at this price. I've used one and it was noisy though, the fan runs at full speed all the time, not temperature/load sensitive. "Turbo cooling fan" isn't an understatement.

Also found (as in one of the argos reviews) wouldn't work with one laptop psu I had, light on inverter flashing (i.e. failure code). But it worked with everything else, e.g. light bulbs, phone chargers, battery chargers.

Because most inverters including this one give a modified sine wave you can't use it with some things but that's explained in the manual.

Also you have to connect to the battery directly with the supplied clamps to use over 100 watts. The cigarette lighter plug is fused for less than 100 watts only.

Check the capacity of your battery.
...and then divide by at least two. The capacity of car batteries says more about the peak current they can provide rather than the total energy they can deliver. They are not designed to be discharged fully and doing it regularly will quickly destroy them. That's why "leisure batteries" are more expensive.
#23
Good luck finding any stock of these!
#24
So is this good for say a laptop etc?
#25
Bummer, none in a 25 mile radius of me :(
#26
Might be worth folk reading the reviews before voting this hot
#28

Sold one on ebay that had a small bit of use for £25 and that was only 1 month ago if that.

Very good buy for someone.

But what s/he didn't say was "butt plug".
#34
Wouldn't it have been better if the socket on this was the other way up?
#35
This is a great price. I paid £25 for a 150watt one a few years back.

A good tip for camping though: get yourself a jump-starter - they're between £20 and £30 now. Charge it up from the car when you're travelling, then power pumps and inverters from THAT when stationary. If you flatten it then you can still start your car!
#36
Tried mine out tonight, seems spot on but the reviews weren't lying when they said it was noisy!!!
#37
Very good find, H&R added
#38
just reserved one

Saw this on the shelf i Maplins for £40....and had sold out.

Picked mine up from Maidstone Argos today

yeah i want one of those in the shape of a can that will fit nicely in my cup holder and not make a loud noise.
