Went into Phones 4 U at lunch time today on the off chance they might have the 8520 on pay as you go, and suprise suprise they do!

The gimp behind the till sold me the more expensive one (O2 - £169.99 + £10 credit) without telling me there was one on Orange.

JUST after I'd paid for it, glanced over at the wall and they have it for £149.99 + £10 credit on Orange!

Obviously I asked if I could switch to that one, seeing as the phone was unlocked, unbranded 'GSM vanilla' stock, but no, he said they no longer have a 14 day change of mind period, URGH! So I'm going to a different branch tomorrow to plead ignorance :P

Anyway, this phone is still at least £180 everywhere else BEFORE the credit, so this should be hot!

Oh, and both black or white ones available :)

This might only be available in selected Phones4u stores as some are able to sell the GSM phone with sim bundled in on PAYG, whereas other stores are currently unable to do this. This should clear up any confusion as to why some can and some cant buy the phone. Its worth ringing around local stores to see who is doing this - otherwise a wasted journey!

totally agree, WTF...I MEAN.. W T F... People like that should be banned from communicating with other human beings.. If I was there, they would have had to call the cops and an ambulance for the guy behind the counter...

To be fair, I work in another phone shop and I know it's not the guys fault, he's just doing his job. That's why I didn't lose my rag with him. They've got policy's and rules in place and he's just doing as he's told, so I let it slide.....for now lol.

And yeah, Orange do Pay as you Go blackberry, dunno how much it is, but they do. As do T-Mobile.

The important thing to remember is, these are UNLOCKED. So any sim you like, any network, and bamm, you've got the Internet.

Me myself, I have a cheap contract sim to go in it already which has unlimited Blackberry data on it. You can get them from around £20/month (O2 for example: 600 mins, 1200 texts, unlimited Blackberry for £20/month online).

Hi,

What colour did you find?

My local shop only has the white available on PAYG, and I really dont want white, would prefer the black!
#9
Yes, you can surf the net fine on a Blackberry on pay as you go. For example, if you are on Orange, you buy a £5 a month data pack if you think you won't be able to access the net and emails from a wifi hotspot. You don't have to pay that though for net access provided you are in a wifi hotspot. Obviously, the Blackberry is no iphone and isn't as good at browsing the net or for game apps, but then again the iphone's annual contract costs are £30-£40 per month, aren't they? So the Blackberry is a third or half the price.

My daughter went into Phones4u today, and she really wanted to buy one of these but the guy insisted they are locked to Orange, and she has an O2 contract.

Are they definitely unlocked? Or if not can they be unlocked?

Can anyone confirm if these are actually unlocked?

Also, is there Orange branding etc? And Daedalus, has your plan worked, putting an O2 Simplicity SIM, I mean does the internet/e-mail work?

Cheers

This is a great deal regardless...H+R

I don't have a simplicity O2 sim, but we shant get into what I've got lol.

I've put an O2 contract sim in there, and the Blackberry Interenet part is working just fine, push emails and browsing all hunky dory. If you have the Blackberry Bolt On selected as your free bolt on on Simplicity then it'll work fine.

Mine is unlocked, unbranded, generic vanilla GSM stock. Basically, it means they take them out of the contract stock pile and bundle it with which ever sim they want to, but charge different prices for it. So if they're fobbing you off saying its locked, chances are is because they don't want to give up their contract stock. After having dealt with 2 of their stores now in 2 days, I can safely say that behind their new "oh, we love customers, and they're our top priority, look how warm and fuzzy we are!" lays the cold hard brutality of Phones 4 U ********ishness that we all remember. They haven't changed at all lol.

By the way, got mine changed for the Orange one after a swift call to their suprisingly good customer services :)
#14
Thank you for clarifying that - I shall tell my daughter to go ahead and get one.

I'm glad you got your exchange sorted
#15
Good think you got the exchange processed, I don't see why they were being difficult in the first place!

I got one of these today in Nottingham.
However, I initially wanted to get the £159.99 deal, however I went into one store and they basically fobbed me off and said it's contract only. I went into another and they said yes they can sell it, but when it came down to me paying they turned around and said 'Ah, we can't sell it at the moment as there's an error with the price codes' or something and told me they contacted customer services but they hadn't got back to them on how to proceed...

Finally i went to another store (yes, Nottingham has 3 branches) and the same problem popped up again. However, they told me I could just buy the unlocked phone for £169. Considering it was only £10 more, I decided to have it.

Now i'm just looking into getting the blackberry internet working on Pay as you go. I just found out it won't work on O2 unless you get a £20 simplicity tariff. Orange is doing it for £5 a month on Pay as you go.

I went into my 2 branches today in Hull and one said they don't currently sell them and the other said they've had them but they're not in stock.
They will definately be getting some before christmas though and they took my number so they can ring me when stock arrives which I thought was helpful.

I am currently on pay and go and when I top us £15 I get unlimited texts and internet. Will this work when I put my sim in the new o2 or unlocked blackberry??
Any Help would be appreciated :)

I did some searching after getting an unlocked 8520 and it would seem that the only pay as you go service that allows Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) is Orange and this is charged at £5 a month.

O2 only do it on the Simplicity 20 contract with the free Unlimited internet bolt on. You'll then have to phone up O2 to get it swapped to a Blackberry Internet Service.

Essentially, unlimited internet plans which come with phones OTHER than Blackberry won't work. It needs it's own internet service.

You can still use the internet, but only over wifi. MMS is also disabled and so are a number of features such as e-mail, maps and the blackberry apps service.

Yep, your spot on markku.

Guys who bought this phone, how are you getting on with it? is it worth it?
#20
Damn! Didn't take too much notice of this! H&R!

p4u in the white rose centre (leeds) insisted that none of these have been sent out, ever. to any shop. (yeah, OK...)

he tried to sell me it with a sim-only deal at the same price. i walked out. bought it from orange in the end.

Different shops might have different phones, my GF bought one of these the other week on orange contract and she got a phone that was not locked to orange, the guy said that they have both locked and unlocked ones but he got us one of the unlocked ones.

read edit - some stores simply haven't got the ability to sell this phone on PAYG as selected stores are trailing a new process.

they are if you buy the iphone as a contract. i avoided the extortionate rates and paid upfront for the handset on payG, then took out a 12 month o2 sim only contract for £19.50 p/m and i get unlimited net and loads more mins/txt than the iphone 18/24 month contracts offer - at half the price.

Well as I said before my GF's phone was a contract but the shops do both sim locked and non sim locked phones on orange, the phone will be the same if its pay or go or not they will just be supplying a different sim card with it.
