Just got an email from Play regarding cheap blu-rays. I know they have sales about as often as Allied Carpets, but this time there are some gems amongst the dross. Some of the more popular or rated ones are as follows:

Becoming Jane
Ocean's 12
The Children
Solomon Kane
Red Cliff
The Passion of the Christ
Hannibal Rising
The Devil's Rejects
Dead Snow
A Perfect Getaway
Football Factory
Sex Drive
Outlander
Love Happens
Never Back Down
Milk
Lord of War
Equilibrium
Downfall
Dr Who and the Planet of the Dead
Transporter 3
Wallace and Gromit's World of Inventions

Eden Lake, The Quick and the Dead, Rogue, Interview with the Vampire, Paranormal Activity, Brick, Thirty Days of Night, Persepolis, Precious, A Single Man, The Road, Run Lola Run, and Jerry Maguire are a bit more at £6.49

Loads of others.

Red Cliff is amazing visually on blu-ray, Milk is an excellent bio-pic, and Brick is a good film noir too.

OK, thanks :-)

Ironically enough I had posted that seperately before, but it is now on the list.

Man Of War looks a good film, has anyone seen it?

You mean 'Lord of War' with Nicholas Cage? Not a classic by any means, but it is an intelligent drama about the arms trade by the writer of 'The Truman Show'. I'd probably give it about a 7, but not particularly inclined to watch it again.

No, Max Manus - Man of War (2008)

You liked Solomon Kane?!

Some good prices for some good films :)

If you're after Red Cliff, pay an extra quid for the full length version...
2 Likes #12
Ahh Play.com.............order a blu ray...two days later find a red card from the post man who was unable to deliver my 'package'......frustrating trip down to delivery office to find out my blu-ray was packages in a box that would have been better suited to packing a laptop or board game.

Agree on Red Cliff, the 2 disc full double movie set is a far superior film and makes more sense as the editing for the shortened version is terrible

I liked Solomon Kane :)

Nothing there that appeals to me personally. Doesn't mean it's not hot for someone else though.

Here is the link for the full version at £6.99 (reduced from £29.99 although I think I would need to be injecting it in my bloodstream to pay that much):

Is it really better though? I have heard that unless you are a die hard fan of Chinese epics, the extended version might drag. The cut version is a good 2 1/2 hours, so would take a big chunk of your day by itself.

Edited By: Feeble on Apr 04, 2011 12:45: Missed the price

I really liked Lord of War, wasn't expecting much from it and was pleasantly surprised considering it starred Cage - hmm tempted....
#17
Got some decent blu ray tittles in there hot from me

Red Cliff special edition BD is £6.91 at amazon. I'm not a huge fan of Chinese epics, but must admit red cliff was awesome. I have it on dvd and it comes in 2 parts - about 2 hrs 15m each part (not sure if Bluray is the same) - highly recommend it.

Equilibrium is the most amazing film and is a must see.

Sounded like a British Matrix copy, although I have not seen it myself.

Red Cliff Special Edition is only £6.99 and it's Reference Quality - Little better than the standard edition at £5.99 - Worth the extra quid!

Blu-ray titles that consistently offer reference level high-definition picture quality that continues to impress both at viewing distances approximately 1.5 screen widths from the display and on larger projection screens over 100”.

A reference quality Blu-ray will generally exhibit the following characteristics:

A sharp image with a palpable sense of depth, clarity, and presence that will often appear nearly three-dimensional in nature.

Excellent contrast, superb shadow detail, and the deepest black levels without macroblocking or clipping.

Exquisite resolution of ultra-fine detail, fabric and surface textures, individual strands of hair, and human faces down to the imperfections and pores. Animated material will often exhibit photo-realistic qualities and will feature beautifully rendered environments.

Sophisticated color palettes will be completely resolved down to the most subtle gradations of each hue. Primary colors will appear striking and dynamic. Black-and-white material will exhibit top-notch and accurate grayscale reproduction.

A film-based title will exhibit natural grain structure free of excessive digital noise reduction (DNR) or filtering that results in a noticeable impact on the image, including waxy looking faces and missing high-frequency detail in general.

Halos and ringing artifacts are either absent or not visible enough to be distracting from standard viewing distances.

No alteration from the originally intended aspect ratio or viewable image area.

An artifact-free video compression encoding that shows virtually no signs of chroma noise, banding, posterization, aliasing, macroblocking, compression noise, and other encoding deficiencies.

The transfer of the Blu-ray will be sourced from a master with virtually no visible flaws. This entails an image free of print damage, dirt, specks, cue marks, and other flaws that should be absent from a new and pristine transfer of source material in excellent condition.

So about as good as it gets on Blu-ray..

Struggled to work out what you meant here...
You say 'Little better', which reads to me that its not worth paying extra for. (or was the 'worth the extra quid' sarcasm?)
or is the 'Little better' sarcasm and you actually mean it is 'much better' and IS worth the extra quid?

Well thank-you for the startlingly comprehensive response. I wonder why they would have a lesser quality picture quality on the shorter version!??!
