This is quite disgusting.
It sickens me.
How dare they.
#8
Everything I've read about this says 5 hours talk time, not the 100 minutes given in the thread here?
#9
can this be used on 3? I take it it's not 3g compatible?

http://www.techeye.net/mobile/chinese-may-have-dumped-handsets-over-christmas

Forget the iPhone, in two weeks over Christmas, Tesco shifted over 10,000 units of a ££18.99 handset called the VX1i Party Phone. That price is so near to the BOC (bill of costs) that Techeye thinks it may have been dumped.

In Britain, of course, everyone is used to subsidised handsets. Indeed, if you sign up for a 24 month contract with Tesco Mobile you can get a 16GB iPhone 3GS for free. Just don't drop it uninsured into the bath.

The point about the VX1i, however, is that it is 'SIM Free'. It will work on any UK network (and it will actually work in the USA too) except for 3. That's because it isn't 3G (W-CDMA) compatible. So it's an absolute bargain.

Considering transportation costs, plus the distributor – Blue Chip World – and retailer's (Tesco's) margins, where's the profit?

This raises the important issue of who actually made the handset. It seems to be a combination of two– Verixas and the Shenzen based Chinese firm, Shenzhen Kosun Industrial Co.

The key component, Techeye suspects, is the GSM-on-a-chip component which provides an instant handset and is probably sourced from Mediatek. The fake iPhone which Techeye has seen appears to use one, too.

It was extremely difficult to obtain the specs for the VX1i as news reports regurgitated simply the press release. However, they are available here when you look for VX1 – Mini Mobile Phone.

A Tesco spokesperson actually confirmed for us that the screen is a colour one. That needed confirming as the handset has disappeared from both the main Tesco and the Tesco Mobile online shops.

Those with an eye for a bargain have been scouring their local stores – mostly to no avail, even though it is officially still on sale.

Techeye thinks a better name for this handset is the 'trollied phone'. So you can quite happily lose it on the train back from an evening's 'networking' and not worry. Especially if you backup your addressbook numbers up online.

Here's some handset specs for the tech heads ...

Talk time 100 minutes
Standby 90 hours

My pub phone is Samsung E590. Just a little bit bigger than this one but with way way more feature's bluetooth, AD2P,3 meg camera with vid, memory card and all the other mod cons. Nice little baby from 2008 on hotdeals only cost £15 still going strong.

Saw these a few weeks ago instore, initial thoughts were great idea, really tiny, etc but after looking at it,its exceptionally basic, even more so than some of the phone's you can pick up for next to nothing,

IMO it's just a bit of a gimmick and not worth the money
#18
it tiny and brillant i love this phone. I got loads of phones blackberry, iphone but this is far by the best small cheap and bloody brillant
#19
lol @ battery stats

Is this model included in the current promotion regarding 1000 free clubcard points for pay as you go mobile phone purchases?

If so, it's a bargain - 1000 clubcard points are worth £10 at the very least, and upto £40 - depending upon what you exchange them for.

No it isn't,it's not a tesco mobile phone

what is the gimmick on a phone that has no features? and where is a guaranteed unlocked phone cheaper?

I said in my opinion,it's a gimmick - a novelty,a toy

CPW,E2save etc do unlocked phones cheap, even if you're forced to buy credit with them,it's cheaper than this plus you have the credit to use
#23
Looks like a toy
banned#24
Seems like a good product, just a little too late.

You can buy properly branded mobiles for around that much nowadays.
#25
You can buy phones for about a fiver these days, but I think the seeling point of this is not the cost, but the size, meaning you can go out carrying less bulk than usual. I'm going to NYC in a few weeks and may get one to take with me, less chance of it getting swiped.
#26
I think they are great - perfect for some uses (perhaps the beach, taking to difficult areas, kids at school), but alas I passed up the oportunity to buy due to secondary function (yet again it beats primary) - we want to risk our £100 phones on holiday to use the cameras, etc.

They had loads of these in Connswater, Belfast.

EDIT: PS If I didn't have a decent sim free phone knocking about the house, there would be one of these beside me now - as others have said CPW etc. do loads of unlocked phones, generally from £15 (inc. £10 of credit) or on occasion £30 with £30 of credit (if it turns up - a whole other thread...), which is why I couldn't justify buying this bargain.
#27
guys does this have text feature in it? if yes den it would be ideal for me.
#28
None online @ Tesco's but bagged one on Ebay for an extra quid!
#29
Sold out in my local Tesco (Solihull, Monkspath) before Christmas but loads back in again.

Got one but haven't tried it yet.

It's not 3G compatible - GSM only.
#31
Nice find! Might buy one of this as a little tech toy :)
#32
I only use my mobile occasionally so this looks great, but the 3 day battery life would be rubbish!

My current cheapy phone is this: http://www.prepaymania.co.uk/mobilephone/nokia-1208-t-mobile-payg.html which only costs £10 delivered to your door (£5 for the phone and £5 of credit) and has a standby battery life of about 2 weeks! (It comes unlocked and unbranded.)

Yes you can send and receive text messages. However, I found the T9 predictive input rather annoying compared to the Sony Ericssons I am used to. Inputting letter by letter works quite well although the phone seems to default to T9 each time you start writing a message. I would say this is not a good primary phone for someone who does lots of texting. It's main strength really is being small, and the call quality and volume is good compared with other mobiles I have used.

Does anyone know which network's PAYG sim is a good emergency sim card? I.e. one that retains credit/doesn't get cut off after one month.
