looking at the two month chart then you can see the direction - which is up, personally I am waiting as I think it will come down some - still very cheap if you need it now

How much cheaper is oil than gas or electric to heat a place?
Both oil and gas will be much cheaper than electric to heat, as electricity is about triple the price of gas.
Whether oil is cheaper than gas depends on how much heat you use, because higher daily gas usage means you're better off with a higher standing charge and a lower cost per kwh.
According to Wikipedia, residential heating oil has 37.3MJ/L, which at a cost of £0.29/L, works out to 0.29/(37.3/3.6) = 2.80p/kWh.
To work out if and how much cheaper oil is, you need to know how much you are effectively paying for gas. To do this multiply your daily gas usage in kWh by your gas price per kWh then add the standing charge. Compare this to your daily gas usage in kWh multiplied by the price per kWh, and you have your answer.
Example using made up numbers:
17kWh x 2.6p/kWh = £0.442
Adding in the standing charge
£0.442 + £0.1 = £0.552 = Gas cost per day
17kWh x 2.8p/kWh = £0.476 = Heating oil cost per day
In this case, ignoring system costs and considering only the fuel, heating oil is cheaper by £0.552 - £0.476 = £0.076 or 7.6p per day or 90 * £0.076 = £6.84 over about 3 months.
I have been doing the same calculations on wood verses oil / other alternatives - personally I think electric is the way to go as -
air heat source pumps normally run at 300 -400% on electricity giving oil a run for it's money - I this is the way I would like to go this way but the initial boiler cost is much higher.
I just filled up our work boiler oil tank (3500 litres) - as it is a Norfolk county school we have to use recommended suppliers and it cost 39p a litre (although I did get a quote at 45p)
the biggest down side to oil is it's a lot of money to spend in one hit!

do they supply the tanks?

Pretty sure they don't, but with oil this cheap I think a decent padlock will be adequate protection ;)
