Synopsis
'More analysis needed' is a comment lecturers repeatedly have to write on their students' work. Proceeding beyond this level of feedback is difficult when many students don't understand what analysis is or how to integrate criticism into their work. With this in mind, "Critical Thinking Skills" has taken the seemingly baffling art of analysis and broken it down into easy to understand blocks, with clear explanations, good examples, and plenty of activities to develop understanding at each stage. It even applies the techniques to reading, note making and writing. Recommending "Critical Thinking Skills" will help your students develop this important set of skills and improve their grades.

This is a very good book. Highly recommended for undergraduates. Lots of sound advice and ideas to work through to tune your mind to working at that level.

Very good price too.

Rep for the links, thanks! I am just finishing an OU course "Making Sense of Complexity" and the content of this book would probably have been very useful. Also my OH who has just finished a PhD highly rates the set of books in this series. I have ordered a copy to use for my next modules.

Students will then want to buy the follow up book titled "Welcome to the real world"

I ordered this a couple of days back as it's on the reading list for my course (not surprising given I'm at Leeds) - wish I'd thought of posting it.

glad i could help!! surprised its quite hot, didn't think many people would be interested but glad u are :)

the delivery is pretty quick -i ordered this along with the better essays one on wednesday afternoon &received on saturday morning. i can't recommend the Palgrave books enough they are really good and simple to read! So useful!!! i also have the study skills one and they have helped me improve so much! i'mnot very good at analysing texts and weighing up arguments and having flicked through this critical thinking skills book it seems to have the answers!! :)

the types of content in this book are:
identifying the argument- it gives many examples & tells you what you should be thinking about & then how to do it, it shows you examples of how it is done.
it looks at false premises, assumptions,denoted/connoted meanings, stereotypes, identifying flaws in an argument-does it weigh up, looking at evidence-how to be selective, how to reference, how to conclude, etc

Is this good for a masters level course??

Depending on the masters course It may be useful, or you haven't done first degree that required a dissertation. I would have thought the skills required for a masters research project would beyond this book, particularly if its science based , although it may be OK for taught courses or Arts type courses

i did critical thinking too at AS level- i agree was a waste of time, but this isn't based on the subject it's more about helping you get 2.1's or first's in university essays. it tell's you what to do to analyse in essays and what lecturers want you to be writing about, which is what they don't tell you how to do at uni.

her study skills book and revision techniques book are also bargain prices. thanks op
