In a late development this evening, Borders UK joint administrators Philip Duffy, Geoff Bouchier and David Whitehouse of MCR announced that closing down sales will begin tomorrow (Saturday, 28th November) at all 45 retail outlets of the chain. The sale will affect all branded Borders and Books Etc stores across the UK.

The loss of jobs is sad - really bad management.

Dreadful for the staff, so much more painful this time of year.

Wonder if the Paperchase products will be reduced, always were overpriced
#2
Probably 50% off stuff that was already 50% overpriced.

Who gives a crap about the staff! What about those who are long-term unemployed with a disability, are fully able, willing to, and seeking work, but because of the discrimination they face time and time again no employers will take them on, and then no employers will take them on because they haven't been employed in ages as well. At least they have had a job and will no doubt find another eventually. I'm not trying to be callous but there's people *much* worse off.

Gosh, never realised. Real life's lesson (always someone worse off).

I doubt that they'd be reduced as it's just a concession inside the store. A bit like GAME I very much doubt they'd be reduced in the Borders store's they're in.

Judge each case on its own merits and not in comparison with others. Are you telling me that if a friend lost their legs in a car crash you would say 'Who gives a crap, there are people who have died in car crashes you know!!'.

I understand the harsh stereotypes and majority of society who think they are better then those who are disabled, my husband is in a wheelchair and people forget he is a human being, stepping over him to reach things on shelves and staring. Try to spare a thought though for the people who have worked at Borders for a long while and know nothing different. The parents who will really struggle this Christmas time now and have the burden of unemployment hanging over them.

There's always someone worse off, but if everybody thought like that, no-one would give a damn for anything.

Thats what Remploy.co.uk are there for, to help with this problem.
I know someone who works for them, and they get employment for many many people with disabilities.

Was about to say I was in the Brighton one today and saw exactly what you have said valid until Sunday. Apparently its off everything but the dvd section was distinctly lacking in "20% off" signs... Knew I should of posted the sale myself but assumed someone else would have already!

Would be great to know more about what bargains can be had! Hope this thread is kept alive.

Shame about the company as it's the only place in the UK that sells my favourite magazine; IDN Magazine. Costs a fortune to buy it online =[ Grr!
#14
The one in my area closed down about 4 weeks ago.

Shame.
#15
The one on Oxford Street (London) closed down over the summer, I was there to witness it at around 5pm on a Saturday.

Honestly, it was like the apocalypse only with coffee and a few more books than you would usually expect.

i think the reason you dont have a job is because your attitude stinks like ****

how can you say something like that, sort your life out and then you might get a job! i for one would not employ someone like you...

build a bridge and get over it!
#18
Shame for the staff, my few experiences there found them to be helpful and pleasant. Retail is a **** profession, a lot of work demanded for little pay. Hope they have some luck stepping up in their careers.

Time to buy shares in HMV....pretty muchonly major high street store left doing music/idvds/books etc. I do feel very sorry for the staff... basically I truly believe that next year could be when the TRUE recession starts (deffo a double dip for me)

gutting. i loved this store. the oxford street store closed not that long ago and it was the most chilled book store ever! you could just pick up a book, plonk yourself on the floor and read for as long as you want. on the positive side i did pick up some bargains including a load of blu rays for a fiver each and books for a pound each. good luck to those unfortunate employees, dont let it spoil your christmas!
#21
Oh Noes.

Where will those laptop show-off, coffee drinking, free book reading, stay for hours people go now?

You'd obviously never been to Ottakars, they were THE most friendly and chilled out bookshops. My old best mates godfather actually owned the chain but got bought out by HMV...

Dreadful for staff as they know they will be sacked soon but will still have to deal with tonnes of vultures at work tomorrow.

Well actually...yes you ARE being callous !!!!

There will nearly always be someone worse off in any tragic situation. So we just stop caring about everyone else do we? No one else is entitled to any sympathy beause it should all be reserved for those worse off. What a strange and very worrying attitude. :o

WHSmith claim to be able to order just about any magazine in for you - maybe ask them to get it for you?

That's why they went out of business, because people like you just sit and read :) free library!

Has this been in the news? There's a couple of Borders in Glasgow but no signs in the windows just yet. Are they closing every store?

"you could just pick up a book, plonk yourself on the floor and read for as long as you want"...... Probably the reason why they've gone bust

Unlikely, most people in Hull don't know what to do with a book

So really bad, I remember taking my first kid (I now have 4),8 years ago...its actually part of our framework....its sad day..just because some manager are stupid to learn ....sell them at low price...and people will buy....

Yep, I was also in the Brighton store yesterday and the 20% off seemed much more heavily featured on the stuff they had downstairs... To be honest, I didn't see anything at a particularly bargain price.

And I keep doing that! I'll see something and naturally presume it's already on here, then a few hours or a couple of days later, someone posts it and gets big heat!!!!
#38
if you have a border gift voucher if the valve is £50 it will only be worth £25 now so if anyone bought gift vouchers for xmas presents get rid of them now . remember zavvi vouchers where worth nothing.

they might claim it but when I tried to get Wizard ordered for my husband despite spending 10mins on the phone to various people and then taking the order and the deposit they decided three weeks later that actually they couldn't get it

Does anyone have a list of Borders Shop locations?
