Am I right to assume that the 3yr Warranty is an Acer one, as the listing states 12month Argos Warranty?

Thanks

Edit: Ordered anyway...worth a go for my daughter at that price, Thanks heat added :)

I was just about to ask the same. Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks

Voted hot. Perhaps add price to the title?

It states clearly "includes pre-registered 3-years warranty". By Law, if it doesn't include this warranty, you'd be entitled to a full refund (including postage).

Silly me, right you are. I have a script blocker on my browser which blocked all of that information. Thank you :)

Is that graphics card a shared one or a dedicated one?

Good graphics for the price

I always make a habit of avoiding "INTEL HD *&*****^&^&*((" graphics chipsets as they are not good for anything other than basic tasks.

I'm torn between this and http://www.comet.co.uk/p/Laptops/buy-ASUS-X52F-EX486V-Laptop/676934
I know the asus is the better machine but this is so much cheaper now.

Whats this mean?

'This listing is restricted to pre-approved buyers only. Email the seller to be placed on that pre-approved list'

Intel HD graphics are often better than these very low end AMD and Nvidia chips. DirectX 9 games are playable albeit on lower settings.

Intel HD: 323
Mobility Radeon HD 4250: 148

What's up with laptop manufacturers starting to make so many laptops with the numeric keypads

The reappearance of the numpad on laptops is due to manufacturers using 16:9 ratio screens, which not coincidentally have the same resolution as 720p television screens. This means the laptop is wider and shallower than older widescreen models, meaning they can fit more keys on.

it says on the benchmark that lower is better so the ati is better than the intel hd yeah?
#18
...not to mention how useful they are in today's games.

No, higher is better. If you want the rank, Intel HD is 271, AMD 4250 is 484.

Hey, has anyone tried installing Ubuntu 10.10 on it?
Any compatibility problems?
Cheers

Is it 32 or 64bit Windows 7?

Neither Intel HD nor Radeon 4250 is going to be much cop for games younger than 3 years old except in their lowest settings with poor framerate. If you want to buy a gaming laptop you'll have to spend upwards of £700.
#23
how do the returns work with these?
#24
can this do 1080p?
#25
I don't know how they generated those mis-leading benchmarks quoted above - but only the very latest Intel HD on their Arrandale chips have similar horsepower - but they are still outperformed in real games by the HD 4250 because of cruddy intel drivers.

See the following, and scroll to the bottom for actual benchmarks:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Radeon-HD-4250.29664.0.html

Quote: "Still older games like Doom 3 or Quake 4 should be playable. Compared to older onboad graphic chips (e.g., GMA 4500MHD), the HD 4250 is much faster. The new Intel HD Graphics in the Core ix Arrandale CPUs, offers a similar performance, but the driver support by AMD should be better."

can this do 1080p?

Good question. The screen resolution is not full HD so 720p will look fine. As for whether it will play 1080p and/or stream it to your tele, notebookcheck.net quotes the following about the HD 4250 graphics chipset:

____________________________________________________

ATI Radeon HD 4250

The AMD ATI Radeon HD 4250 (sometimes also ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 called) is an onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip in the RS880M chipset. It is based on the HD 3400 graphics core and features the UVD 2 video engine to decode HD videos (Avivo HD - can decode two HD streams simultaneously). Compared to the HD 4200, the 4250 offers a similar performance, but the power consumption could be a bit better.

Compared to the old HD 3200, the 4250 supports DirectX 10.1 and features the UVD2 video decoder.

The UVD 2 video engine is able to decode HD videos (MPEG-2, H.264, and VC-1) in all stages and allows the fluent playback of HD videos (e.g. Blu-ray) with a relative low CPU utilization (called Avivo HD). The HD 3200 was the first onboard graphics card that allows the fluent playback of Blu-ray videos. The UVD 2 in the HD 4250 supports the decoding of two video stream and therefore got a full Blu-Ray support.

The above reads to me like it should handle 1080p. Any experts out there care to comment?

i know theres not a lot of difference in Spec, but is this Acer a better deal than the Compaq CQ56-113SA Posted on a few days ago?? I ordered the compaq as a Xmas present but i'm tempted to return and order the Acer..what do you guys think?

It would be great "if" you could buy it now but you have to email them to be pre approved which could take a day or two then less chance of a delivery before christams :(
#31
After midnight you can order without approval - so the listing says anyway

Here's a comparison I made of £300 laptops posted here recently

hi guys,

This may seem a silly question but i have an old Dell Dimension 2350 which is slowly but surely dying on me & was looking to replace with a laptop. It appears from the above this would be good replacement - any comments/advice please??

thanks
#33
is it worth spending extra £80 to have a phenom 930 cpu. seen the emachine in argos, has pretty much same specs, but have seen the phenom hammers the 320, practically twice as fast. debating whether its worth it or not
#34
So the upside to the Acer over the compaq is DDR3 Ram, HDMI out, and a numpad... and thats it? Im assuming the CPU performances would be more or less identical if it wasnt for the ddr2 ram in the compaq

I'm thinking the Compaq may be a better buy - Acer has better video, HDMI and DDR3 though - CPU is better in Compaq.....all good for this price point mind
#36
Hmm, ive been speaking to a mate and hes said the difference between the CPU's are extremely small, and where the Acer has DDR3 ram, hdmi out and the dedicated vga card, decoding hd and outputting to a tv would be perfect on the acer.

It seems the Acer has more or less identical performance to the compaq, just with some extra features like the numpad, hdmi, and dedi-vga card...so surely its a better buy? Although i'm still not sure?

The compaq has an LED backlit screen, but aparently the Acer screen is really nice anyway...

Anyone dealt with returns from the Ebuyer ebay outlet before? I've just sent them an email asking how i'd go about making a return, but im not holding my breath for a fast response!
#37
It seems the video is onboard not standalone, so shares 256mb RAM

well i bought one, i cudnt justify extra £80 for a emachine with phenom cpu. and for £300 and 3yr warrenty cant be bad

This is now available to everyone without the pre-approved list!
