It's a 64 bit capable CPU, so it should run Ubuntu 64 bit OK.

I'd expect there are 2 slots for RAM, supplied with 1 2GB and 1 1GB. Max RAM if you're happy replacing modules is 4GB, as that's all the chipset supports.

I got a similar medion refurb over a year ago from the official medion site that looked brand new to me with slightly lower specs than this but an nvidia 8600GM graphics for £255 delivered and its been on and off every single nite since then and had no issues at all.

Errrrmmmm if you read what he said it actually makes sense

That looks identicle and I mean IDENTICLE to my Fujitsu Simens Amilo 2735.

Even the spec is the same.

Cracking little computer.

Would never buy from Ebay Argos Clearance again, unless you don't mind the laptop arriving dented and battered, as they just post everything shoved into a plastic bag.
You then find out customer service does not exist, so much so that I believe eBay is considering removing them

applehead makes a great point - anyone had similar service

I bought a netbook of them last week, it came without the recovery DVD so I contacted the company that refurbs then and they were excellent with there customer service and sorted it out for me. Oh and the netbook hasn't got a mark on it, just like brand new.
#15
My experience buying from then has been terrible. I ordered a Laptop and they sent me an inferior model of that laptop which I had to jump through hoops to send back, then they didnt refund my payment for over a month untill I gave them extremely negative feedback. The deal, however, is good. But anyone ordering, be warned.

Ditto the above. My cd was snapped. They sent another post haste.

Plus, we've had a Medion PC for 8 years, still going strong, and I have a Medion Akoya laptop that is the mutt's nuts. Great spec, very robust.
#17
Gonna give it a spin, at that price it may well be worth it, cheers OP.

i bought a mp3 player from them before xmas and it was faulty. asked for a refund . eventually got a reply to send it back to them but no address given to send it back to. the ebay case i opened against them is still awaiting there response since nov! so beware that you might not get a refund/ replacement for a faulty laptop if you buy 1

My sympathies to the unlucky people above who have had bad experiences using the argos clearance website. There is always a degree of risk when buying from these low margin, clearance operations, whether it is underwhelming customer service or the condition of the item purchased.

The web page says there are 78 items to sell, they are brand new and come with a full 12 month guarantee. With a good spec at such a low price, this particular offer seems a risk worth taking. Think i'm gonna bag me one of these puppies right now. Heat added (and fingers crossed).
#22
Excuse my ignorance here people but what exactly does the 'V2' in the argos listing title refer. A number of other laptops listed on their ebay pages carry a V1 or V2 new or refurb ref. I was guessing it was a grading of general cosmetic condition but wondering why that might apply on an item being sold as new, can anyone clarify? Thanks in advance.
#23
Worst company to deal with ever ordered a black netbook from them they sent a pink one it was filthy and the box looked like it had been under a car.

That was 2 weeks ago and 4 phone calls and several emails latter I still don't have the item I ordered.

They send out unrefurbished and untested customer returns check out the msi wind thread on here. Any problems you are on your own. Their customer service is so bad it makes my ryes bleed.
#24
Worst company to deal with ever...

argos-clearancebargains 376281 transactions and 99.3% Positive feedback.
I'm not saying that people haven't had mentioned problems, but if you look at the volume of sale and the fact that they are selling mostly refurbished gear 0.7% of unhappy customers is not a lot. Needless to say that the akoya laptop deal is for a brand new one. I personally have ordered with confidence.

Excuse my ignorance here people but what exactly does the 'V2'

You have confused v1and v2 with A,B,B+ etc. grade;
v1 v2 refering akoya laptop stand for different processors (v1- celeron 1,8 GHz; v2- full pentium 2,0 GHz)

Good, they are cowboys. I have bought from them only twice, first time the item was listed as new but turned out to be very used. The 2nd item didn't work full stop. Took about 2 weeks to get my money back both times, never ever again. I will always vote cold for these idiots.

From the Argos reviews website it appears there were two versions of this model, the V1 and V2. V2 means it is the most recent one. No cosmetic differences but several improvements to the spec. V2 has an faster CPU (from T3000 1.8GHZ to T4200 2.0 GHZ), more ram (2 GB Ram to 3 GB ), *ahem* an upgraded operating system (Vista Basic to Vista Premium). Shame Windows 7 is not included but in my experience, Vista is perfectly ok if the processor can handle it - and this can.

I was really after a laptop with win 7 but the spec of this machine for the price has almost snagged me - I have used Argos clearance before with no problems.
#29
Quidco too.

What gaming would this cope with? Thanks.

Based on the last offer posted on here 200 of the 500 netbooks they sold were returned. It tells a story. They are sellingl untested unrefurb customer returns. People had systems with non english OS installed, faulty psu, faulty keys. Most people got the wrong colour - then the replacements were a different model from the one they ordered.

Its cheap just as the netbook offer posted recently but be aware what you are buying. Little or no customer support and untested / unrefurb customer refurb.

Complete pot luck - most of the negative feedback they have received has been for laptops !

Advertised as NEW, if it's been opened already it goes back along with negative feedback and a complaint to EBAY for selling second hand items advertised as new - I'll let you know how I get on:thumbsup:
#32
The netbooks were advertised "As new" fully refurb and tested.

Most people got the wrong colour. Majority had faults, were dirty / damaged packaging / incomplete - missing install discs, cases manuals etc.

Someone that works for dhl came on and said they had collected 200 for replacements from the refurb company argos farm these out to (of a different model to that which people had ordered)

This was based on sales of around 500 from their ebay store.

So I would say good luck you will need it - complete pot luck what you will receive based on last offer !

Also I ordered my netbook on the 1st may (wrong colour / filthy / incomlete and damaged packaging received)

I still havent received my replacement. So get ready for numerous phone calls / emails / jumping through hoops to get a refund or replacement based on my experience. I complained to ebay - the reply from Argos clearance they basically laughed and said returns procedure is clearly stated - tough luck (despite it being their faulyt and totally not as advertised).

People cant say they havent been warned, this is £100 less than a similar spec laptop with windows 7 personally based on experience I would pay the extra £100 to get a new item with full manufacturers warranty from a reputable retailer like Dell. You are hoping for luck with this company.....
#33
Well these are being advertised "New" not "As New" so I know what I'm expecting :prop:
#34
Based on my experience I would say get ready to be disappointed.

I shared in your belief when I ordered from them :whistling:

Check out the thread for yourself :

Like I said as with the netbook this is a good price - but Argos clearance dont seem to sell new stock, its clearance lines and managers specials so it will certainly be a pleasant surprise if everyojne ends up getting nice new sealed laptops. I note Argos still seem to sell this model but at £350. So why are they selling these for £250 in their clearance outlet ?

Its all very well saying you will send them back as well - thats what I have done and 16 days and numerous phone calls and emails latter I still dont have what I paid for or a refund. If you do have to send it back or use the warranty you have a big big problem in my experence ( and most others on here it would seem)

I would stick ubuntu on these BTW Vista is shocking especially on laptops.
#35
Good price for the spec but I really am not a gambler, I have been to their actual store and bought several electrical items, some "new" and some refurbed, and out of the lot only one item actually worked!

The stuff they tend to sell is literally crap i.e. "new" stock usually means stuff which Argos stopped selling because of high failure rates and Refurb stock is the stuff argos have had returned due to the above.

Their stock is the sort of goods sold through other independant clearance type shops and in markets, though at a higher price with these guys.

People would do well to heed some of the advice regarding these guys, unless of course you like to gamble.

Thanks for that topazz, I stand corrected and will now perhaps make me more inclined to place an order, mind you, given some of the negative comments about argos clearance I am still somewhat undecided

Well I am a gambler when it come to bargains - but I like the odds to be stacked in my favour - and this is a strategy that has worked well for me.

Lets look at the facts as I see them..

1) The Medion E5211 seems to have very good feedback from Argos (V1 and V2) and Sainsburys and Medion themselves have a reasonable name as a lower end producer

2) Sainsburys had this very model for sale 2 months ago as a clearance item at £199 - so for Argos to have 70 of these still in stock as NEW for clearance doesn't seem unsreasonable.

3) Argos outlet on Ebay also sell this model as a refurb for £279 - why would they have a different listing if these are also refurbs and then charge £20 less

4) Covered by Paypal/Ebay guarantees, not likey to lose my money

5) I've bought from Argos clearance before and the items were new and I had no problem

Like I said above, I'll be the first to let you know how I get on:thumbsup:

Calm down people. Despite the negative comments from a number of argos-clearance outlet customers, i remain confident that this particular offer is a very good deal and a risk worth taking because:

a) the argos customer feedback reviews for this product are overwhelmingly positive.

b) the offer clearly advertises them as NEW and it comes with a full 12 month guarantee. If it is a return or a refurb, Argos usually states ‘as new’ or something similar. Trade practice is to categorise them as ‘grade B‘ stock. If, when I receive it, I find the box has been previously opened, as long as it is unused (easy enough to detect), it looks NEW and works like NEW and everything that should be there, is there – I probably will live with that – it’s part of the risk I accept. Anything else and they have broken the law and will be held to account – simple as that.

c) the fact that they are advertising a batch of at least 78 items, gives some credence to the theory that they are shifting old stock to make way for new and they will be (fingers crossed) NEW and unopened.

Judging from the unhappy vociferous HDUK ‘ers, the argos-clearance outlet clearly has work to do on their quality control and service. But as noted earlier, they do have a 99.3% positive feedback. As ever, you pays your money………
#40
Keep in mind they were shifting decent numbers of the netbooks, most of the ones people received were the wrong colour or were faulty.

Read the thread Argos Clearance outlet clearly send out untested customer returns !

As with the netbook some people will get lucky, a handful of people received new netbooks most didnt. Its a gamble and will take weeks and numerous phone calls / jumping through hoops to sort out a refund if it doesnt pay off.
