No one would confuse the desperate dad Bryan Cranston plays in this character-driven drama with the fun-loving Hal from Malcolm in the Middle. In Breaking Bad, Walter White lives in the suburbs with his wife--and wears tighty-whiteys--but the similarities end there. During the pilot, the cash-strapped chemistry teacher finds out he has inoperable lung cancer. He and Skyler (Deadwood's Anna Gunn) have one son, Walter Jr. (R.J. Mitte), and a daughter on the way. With two years to get his affairs in order, Walter comes up with a wild plan: he and former student Jesse (Aaron Paul), a drug dealer, will open a meth lab.

In the hands of creator Vince Gilligan (The X-Files), Bad's first season plays like the improbable offspring of Weeds and The Shield. With nothing left to lose, the Albuquerque 50-year-old uses his death sentence as a catalyst to break every rule he's ever followed while keeping his family--including Skyler's radiologist sister, Marie (Betsy Brandt), and her DEA agent husband, Hank (Dean Norris)--out of the loop. Throughout these seven episodes, Walt takes on a hostage, a dead body, and a partner who likes to sample his own product. Based on the description alone, it shouldn't work as well as it does, except Gilligan and company keep the situations psychologically believable and Emmy winner Cranston makes Walt surprisingly sympathetic as he swings between compassion and self-interest. As he tells his students, "Chemistry is the study of change", a statement that applies equally well to the show, since Walt ends up in a very different place than where he began. --Kathleen C. One of the better TV series. Why is it not shown on British TV, I will never know (runs in other EU countries on 19 deg Astra).

seasons 3 is gr8

Halfway through season 2 at the min, love it.

Just watched season one, thought it was great. Nice dark humour to it (Dexter's probably the closest equivalent).

It's been quite a bit more expensive to buy until now, but we rented it for £6 for the week from Blockbusters. There are only seven episodes in this first season so easily do-able.

Also, has been on Freeview, think seasons one and two were on FiveUSA over christmas, one episode a night.

Has anybody seen season two cheap-ish anywhere?

I found the ending to season 1 a little rushed, seemed to lose its way slightly. Thinking maybe the writers strike got it? Regardless, season 2 has started well. I'm on episode 8 I think.

A very good show for a very good price.

#14
yeah great show, just waiting for series 3 to progress in the US ;)
#15
Crackin series one of my favs, a steal at this price!
#16
Quality US programming for a change.
Put up there with Sons Of Anarchy, United States of Tara, Dexter, The Wire, Deadwood etc.

I cant see why, when the uk broadcasters buy the rights, they dont promote and air these series at prime time - Surely better than the ITV1 drivel force fed onto us

p.s. Series 3 of Breaking Bad is going well

Was shown on Five USA. I didn't see it, but it says it on the front of the DVD. They wouldn't have released the DVD without it being shown on TV or noone would buy it.

One of my favourite TV series evarrr!

Five US does pick up some good shows, but then, who watches five US? :/ Think they've also shown journeyman, eli stone, amongst others. I am surprised more (any?) shows dont go from five us and are reshown on other channels.

I'm not sure I'd agree that Sons of Anarchy (it's just a bit too soft but certainly watchable) is up there with The Wire or Breaking Bad but based on your recommendations, I'll check out United States of Tara & Deadwood

There is a five US? :?

Season 3 is a bit of departure so far, with Walt having to live with the consequences of the actions he took to provide for his family. It will be interesting to see how it develops from here.
