Just got myself a 3 nights break over the Bank Holiday weekend (1 - 4 May) in the Britannia Hotel, in Aberdeen for 2 adults and 1 child (in a double room with roll out bed).
With Dinner, Bed and Breakfast for £105!!! Its called the Aberdeen Special.
The "published rate" is £675! Wowsers!
B+B is available for £75 too.
The hotel is 3 stars with 144 ensuite rooms, pool and gym. Looks pretty nice, and for such a cheap price at bank holiday week/end i'm not complaining!

hotscot, do you think this is just a webpage error with the room rate info box? Cos it says the same " this is our last minute one night......" etc etc when you look at both the 3 night option or the 1 night option???
Och now i'm confused! I was meant to be treating my mum to a weekend away .... hope i've not "blonde'd this up"

There might be a reason for this offer - check out the Tripadvisor reviews before you book:

I'm pretty sure Shell use this hotel for their personnel 'night-stopping' prior to and coming back from offshore.
Although it's been a while since I've stayed in it it's an OK hotel, I wouldn't pay full price for it.

Started life as a Holiday Inn, before various guises then the Britannia.
Plenty of Car Parking(free?) and almost on the flightpath for the nearby Airport(Helicopters from 6am).

On the main drag into town from the North, so road is very busy 0730-0930 & 1545-1800, on main bus route into town, see First Bus site for details.

There is loads to do and see in the area, enjoy your holiday.

Our company put us up there for a long time (Oil Company)... Bad food, £15 Taxi in to the City and the rooms are very poor.
If the Oilys dont like it, the tourists def wont.

I stayed here back in November with the wifie for 1 night after a night out (they had a special offer on at the time).

The room was much better than I had been led to believe it would be from the reviews on tripadvisor & the staff were pleasant and helpful. (room was a good size, well furnished although not with new furniture and most importantly "felt" clean).

The only meal we had was breakfast and as I remember it was pretty standard hotel fare - certainly no complaints from us.

I dont know if I was just lucky but I would definately stay there again.

Why would you want to stay in Aberdeen? :S

Seriously though - Britannias are in fact dumps as mentioned above. The Adelphi in Liverpool is a Britannia, and if anyone can remember the TV show about it you may have second thoughts!!

In any event, clearly cheap as chips. Voted hot - just be aware that 3* may be misleading!

Vicki,

You can buy m a pint when your up here

If you want ideas as what to do over your 3 nights give me a shout,

enjoy

By the looks of the Tripadvisor review they could be giving the rooms away for free and i'd still be struggling to find a reason to stay in the hotel.

I'm from Aberdeen,
If its the one in Bucksburn its a great wee hotel.
Just watch! speed cameras in a 30 limit outside the door on both sides of the road...

great location for staying in Aberdeen,

just a 20min bus ride into town - saves parking!

the carnival is nae bad, £9.99 wrist band I think it is for all day..... its down at the beach and there is a not bad swimming pool down there behind the beach ballroom too with wave machine..

if you want to know anything about the area, just let me know and I will do my best.

seems like a really good deal as you would be that price if you went off the street and just had a meal!!!

I can certainly sympathise with anyone else who has had the misfortune to stay at the adelphi - I was there fore two nights in March, had a fairly nice looking room with nice high ceilings but the bathroom was positively 1960s, the food was plain dire (and we had a "banquet" provided on the Saturday night in their Crompton Suite!) Had loud kareoke until 3 am, and fire alarms on and off for the rest of the flaming night - totally ruined the trip, as we needed to be awake for an academic competition the next morning. I would never go anywhere near the hotel again! Absolutely dire, and I felt ill for several days after (though whether I can attribute that one to the food or not is entirely open to debate!).

You may think it's a bargain....but please trust me on this one...and cancel it.
My company booked me in there on Monday 20th April...after a flight up from Bristol.

The hotel was less than ( I'd guess ) one quarter full. The romm was disgusting, grubby, unkempt and musty spelling. I asked for an exchange of rooms...only to get one slightly less better, but still a crap heap.

The only other ressies I saw were oil workers who basically use it as a cheap doss house to get tanked up in, blare out karaoke all night and crash out...... so I certainly wouldn't take kids there.

The food was bland and insipid....service was pathetic, and very slapdash which is bad given all the staff have to do is bring hot edible food to your table, although they were incapable of even doing this, since they mixed the orders up and the "food" was lukewarm...a breeding ground for germs!!.. that's BAD service and even more so when I noted there were only 6 other diners there ( that should have warned me anyway! ).

I sorted out a city hotel...packed my bags and left at 9.30p.m. I've NEVER EVER had to decied to walk out of a hotel before, so not a decision I took lightly, but this place is the absolute pits!!!
All I can say is if you pay £10 for 3 nights here , even including D, B&B......you'll come away disappointed...and having watsed a Bank Holiday! I can't even imagine what the rooms, service will be like if the place is full....given how crap it is when it's empty! No wonder they have to give the rooms away!!Not voting either way since we all have different expectations....... but you have to ask why they're charging £105 for 3 nights including food! for a family of 3 !!! No decent hotel could even feed you for that amount...let alone supply a room etc...
#26
Do not go this is a dump get your cash back wife and I stayed here in december the old heating system ie pipes and radiators comes on at 2 am and wakes you up the bar is so cold the locals would rather pay an extra 50pa drink to go across the road other complaints to long to mention complained to company and got zilch back ignorant and totally unhelpful
#27
Nope it may not be the best hotel, but for £105 it's hot, 3 days is perfect for visiting Aberdeenshire and the Cairngorms.

My parents stayed there a couple of weeks ago - no complaints.

Another choice piece of publicity for Britannia from 2007, this time about dirty hotels.

I wonder how financially secure they are? Use a credit card if you must book - at least that way you'll get protection under the Consumer Credit Act if anything goes wrong.

Hi C02000

I'm thinking about a trip to Aberdeen but I've heard some horror stories. A friend of mine witnessed a little white car driving around the main "nightclub" area throwing eggs at people. He then later saw the occupants out of the car and the police were hitting them with batons?!?!

Is that sort of thing common?

Let me know because I'm eager to visit the "Granite City"!!

The little rat monsters deserved every hit of the baton they got. Malarking about by throwing eggs could have resulted in a raver being serious injured or loosing their glowstick!!

This idiotic driving behaviour must be a common thing in Aberdeen. I stay about 30 miles north of the "Granite City" and on one occasion when visiting my cousin who stays in the Bridge of Don some idiot in a red Seat Ibiza produced a series of "handys" and "doughnuts" at the end of her street and was very lucky not to crash in to tree.

I think spotty, chavvy, tracksuit wearing, exam failing, boy racers are distributed widely throughout these fair Isles and arent confined to Aberdeen........................or Essex.

Just hope they write their cars off in a single vehicle accident as opposed to taking one of us with them.

Hear Hear!!

There's a tool that lives near me who drives the most ridculous vehicle. He's got a little Clio and he's rigged up some string around his horn and up to the handle above the door so he can pull it like a trucker to blast his horn. I think i've also seen a little driving aid thing on his steering wheel so he can take corners faster!

Some of the things you see beggar belief.

That one didn't seem the best, I was there for a few days on a course, I never stayed there but the people who were did not have much nice things to say.

It's on the outskirts a little too

I live in the BOD quite a bit when in the UK and in all the miles I cover, the worse cases of driving I witness are by older people as opposed to your boy racer sterotypes.

And the female driver is often used as a tag but again the worst driving and has came females.....funnily enough they often have their child/children in the car and the lights flash '20' not '50'

WELL...

to be honest, I feel very safe in Aberdeen.
Quite often frequent the town... and like everywhere else there are places which are less desirable but, unless you go the locals within the council estates your security would be absolutely fine.
staying in bucksburn, where the britannia hotel is you would get the late buses home - which i often frequent, better than standing in a taxi queue and paying 5 times the price... they leave approx 1.30 2.30 and 3.30 and would drop you off pretty much at the door - infact the hotel is opposite the bucksburn police station - manned 24hrs... so, should be a problem for security there....
depends your age/taste in music/dates you are into -
i would recommend soul, tonik, paramount, then up to college and on to babylon... but, again thats all down to taste.

re driving... Aberdeen is in the LOWEST insurance rating so it really cant be that bad!!!!
yes, you get the odd plonker but, don't you anywhere???
and yes, the young girls/loooooons cruise the town... yes, dont they anywhere and they hang about down the bully - which is the beach boulevard down beside the carnivals, but thats at night - 9pm onwards when all the families should be tucked up in bed.....

have stayed there, but its 5plus years ago when a friend got married and it was absolutely fine, its nae a 5star but, certainly not the pits. and the meals are fine..
my mother in law goes there at new year for their party and never a bad word about the place!

its the granite city, oil capital of europe.... AN OFF HAND quote - WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO VISIT ABERDEEN>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

why would you want to visit anywhere?????????? to experience new things, see new things.

go up royal deeside where the queen comes her summer hols...

depending which time of the year you are coming fit in a highland game - Lonach with A Class Celebs, that are drawn to the ocassion by Billy Connelly....

Think you will find the biggest bad press that Aberdeen has had recently is when the Copter went down this month.... It was a tragedy but, most of the UK's helicopters off shore leave from here so, sooner or later there was going to be an accident. Tragic for all involved.....

anyway, getting late, but, if you need any more info just let me know and i will be pleased to help...

That's really informative, thanks for replying.

The last time I was in Scotland I went to some highland games just outside Aberdeen (Hazelhead or something I think) and I was shot with paintball pellets when I cycled past. The little *******s were hiding in the trees.

I was quite traumatised at the time. :((

Sorry, I forgot to ask but my friend was speaking about a nightclub called ama dingdong. He said it was the best nightclub in Scotland. I can't find it on the internet, can you shed any light. He said it was down beside the bully????
#40
There was one called Amadeus but its been shut down for a while - was a bit awkward to get too and from being at beachfront, andpeople that lived outside Aberdeen had to get a bus into centre then taxi or bus to suburbs as there were never enough taxis to go round! Never went as I stayed out road so easier to stick to city centre (And been out of action alcohol wise last 5 years due to having kids!) but am sure it was several years ago it shut down...

Think Abz is pretty safe though - I have heard stories that in Glasgow and other places some clubs have signs to leave weapons etc at door, Yeah you do get drunken idiots every now and again but town is mainly full of teeny boppers. Xmas and New year are best times to go out - great atmosphere and everyone friendly.
