These were posted about three months ago at this price.
Hard pushed to find one at £9.99 delivered at the moment though :-

The USB version operates via a USB port on your home PC or laptop. Standby Saver uses intelligent technology to detect when your PC or laptop has powered down and automatically cuts power to all other peripherals that are plugged into it.

I'm not going to vote on this but I have a similar device that runs my TV, Sky box, etc. and I am fed up to the back teeth with my TV and all the other devices powering down (switching off) halfway through a film.

I can't see it escaping the bin before Christmas.

Shame that people are voting Cold - as a HUK - given the price on-line else where - this seems good to me!

Let alone good for the environment - I am currently using two of them.

You're quite right, even if I ain't too keen on them. If the price is lower than anywhere else then it must be voted hot.
    Better vote now.

One for the lounge (TV, DVD etc) and one for the Study (PC, printer, router etc) is not exactly excessive!

Even at £9.99 doubtful it will ever pay for itself in it's lifetime.

£10 = roughly 10W of continuous power for 1 year.
One desktop PC when powered off but still plugged in consumes roughly 4 or 5W so it’s very easy to save 10W and that’s per year.

In the big scheme of things - ecologically speaking - it’s not so much about the cost to an individual more the reduction in cost and impact to the environment as a whole.
    Surely …… ?

So how much did it cost to manufacture and what is the cost of shipping it halfway around the world in environmental terms

Are you asking him/her to prove climate change? There's plenty of information both for and against available out there.

I wonder how many megawatts it takes to make & transport each one probably from China who don't give a **** about global warming!

If you really want to save energy stand over your electric kettle and switch it off as soon as it boils. My kettle takes between 10 to 15 seconds to auto off. That is serious wastage

You said that he was talking nonsense so I wondered if you were firmly in the ‘Climate change is nonsense’ camp. So specifically, what did you think was nonsense about what he said?

Mine does that but only for about 5 seconds; maybe I should time it. :)

If a kettle consumes 1kW, over-boils for 10 seconds and you boil it 10 times a day the extra energy comes to roughly 1W being consumed 24/7 which will cost about £1 per year.
As a comparison a desktop PC that is powered off but connected to the mains will consume roughly 4W.

Have you noticed how ANYTHING related to power (batteries, insulation or energy saving) gets totally off course in some convoluted argument? :-(

Even if there IS no such thing as global warming, and even if in decades to come, it is proved that CO2 turns out to be GOOD for the environment and actually cools the planet down, then this, and many other energy conscious products still have great benefit, they SAVE MONEY.

People just don't seem to understand it, and go on and on, about all the side points when with the simplest of mathematics, and not a complex arguable issue in sight, the biggest deal, now is: there is money to be saved by saving energy, and done right it causes almost no inconvenience!

Now if anyone can make a good argument up about why this is not a good idea because we should NOT be saving money, then let us hear it, otherwise go and argue some other useless point somewhere else, and let everyone else benefit by this and similar savings which may or may not also have the benefit of saving the rest of the planet.
