On the lookout for one as my old Playtv died, youview seems to be the most potent and this box gets high ratings on Amazon and the usual price is £135, enjoy!

Here's the blurb!

BT's new Youview+ Box is sleeker and more compact than ever and operates even faster for a more responsive TV experience with no noisy fan to distract your viewing. No subscription is required and you can scroll back 7 days in your programme guide and watch catch up TV on your TV. You can pause and rewind TV and record up to 300 hours of TV. You can even set up recordings from your Iphone or Android smartphone. Nothing on you fancy? No problem. Go to the huge On Demand library and access all the content from BBC Iplayer, ITV Player, 4OD, Demand 5, Milkshake and many more.

If I have BT Internet can I just use this to get the BT TV options or do I need to pay the extortionate £49 fee to "activate it"?

You'll probably need to pay the activation fee plus the monthly subs. Perhaps they may give you some discount if you say you already have the box.

Personally I've found the most reliable youview box to be the Talk Talk Huawei DN370T 320GB Ftreeview PVR I bought from ebay for less than £30!

Great little box. Just a note but BT are currently offering this box with the "Entertainment Plus" TV package for a measly £5 a month with no activation fee - so £60 for the box overall (12 month contract). Fantastic price if you ask me.

I've just cancelled Sky so am looking around for a box to replace Sky+ - it all gets a bit confusing as to which service to go for and which box!

Is Youview the best option out of Youview, Freeview and Freesat (Freeplay?)? And which box?

Thanks

Just to confirm what JPS said above, I got same deal £5 per month and no activation fee, only cost was delivery.

Additional bonus which may be of use to others is because I was already paying £5 a month for my full BT Sports app they cancelled this and my £5 is now paying for the entertainment package. In effect I am paying absolutely no more per month than before but now additionally have the sport on my TV as well as mobile devices.

YouView set up was reasonably straightforward, I'm using a powerline adapter for connecting the Internet aspect of the box and it took a wee bit of faffing but working great now.

Oh and an uncharacteristic bit of praise for BT, communications via text & email were superb, in fact noted a huge improvement generally in their customer service.

I got that exact box for £50 brand new via a local ad about 3 years ago. It was far from reliable and needed a factory reset a few times. It died completely last year. Still I guess I may have been unlucky.

My family and I have had a few different Youview/Freeview+ recorders and they all seem a bit hit and miss for reliability which is not surprising given how unreliable hard disks can be. I have had two of the previous BT Freeview models. One has lasted very well whilst the other died pretty quickly.

The Talk Talk Huawei DN370T 320GB is a slightly more basic box and the often quite slow to move through the menus. However, it has proved to be pretty reliable.

The box in this thread is easily the quickest Youview box that I have used but can be bought for a lot cheaper than this "deal".

Great box, although the UHD one is even better and I got one of those for about this price. Either get subsidised by BT if you already have BT Broadband, or buy second hand for £50, this is too dear...

I'm looking for the BT UHD box, where did you get one at this sort of price? Much appreciated.

Do I have to be bt customer already to get this deal? Is it available online or via customers helpline only?

That is total ****, it takes 3 mins to switch on each day, and runs hot even on standby! It's also unresponsive and laggy. Apart from that it's fine though...

Yet mine is still working but people I know who have spent hundreds on various youview boxes have had their's fail and either returned them or sold them for spares

thanks, but looks like you can't get TV only, the very next step is to choose bt broadband option and I'm stuck with my current provider for next 6 months...
