In the year 1987, astronaut Buck Rogers (Gil Gerard) is launched on a deep space probe, but his rocket is blown out of trajectory and its lone passenger is frozen for 500 years, returning to earth in the 25th century. When he awakens, Buck is aboard the flagship of the Draconian Fleet and is suspected of being a spy. He is put back into his shuttle and launched towards the Earth's defence shield. However, he is intercepted by Col. Wilma Deeming (Erin Gray) who suspects him of being a pirate after finding a microtransmitter on his ship. In the 25th century, life is concentrated in one enormous city in the American mid-west. Outside the city is Anarchia, a desolate no-man's land, populated by criminals and mutants, where one can still see the rubble of downtown Chicago. Because of his piloting skills, Rogers becomes a valuable member of the Earth Directorate, which is headed by Dr. Elias Huer (Tim O'Connor). Rogers also finds himself part of a fighter squadron headed by Deeming.

In 1979, producer Glen A. Larson (Battlestar Galactica, The A-Team) revived the character of Buck Rogers (originally created in 1928) for a television pilot for NBC. The result got a theatrical release, only to appear a year later on television as a prelude to a series starring Gil Gerard as the astronaut who goes on a space mission, only to awaken 500 years later on a severely different Earth and be chosen to aid a special defence organisation due to his superior piloting skills. In the second season, Buck becomes a crew member on the Seacher, a spacecraft on a mission to find lost tribes of Earth on other planets. Buck's robot assistant is voiced by cartoon legend Mel Blanc.
