I think that this has a Samsung HD so it should be reliable. Trying to keep my finger from hitting the buy button.
#3
I have the 500Gb version and have had no probs at all, would not hesitate to recommend Buffalo.
#4
Have one of these as I think it has been on before at this price but still hot deal and mine has a samsung spinpoint - ultra quiet - very fast - very reliable
#5
Has no eSATA so not really hot for me

eh? USB & eSATA? what would the benefit have been if it had eSATA?

eSATA is a much faster connection than USB - I think eSATA is almost on a par with having an internal IDE drive.
#8
In simple terms eSATA is alot faster than USB2 or Firewire it runs at the same speed as the SATA drive with no lag like you get with USB2 or firewire see some HD Tune Results here eSATA should run just as fast as the 3rd screen grab i.e it runs just as fast as the hard disk its self.

More info here.

you've been pasting the same message all over.

educate me please, how do you get external eSATA disks? These are external disks  :whistling:
#10
The e in eSata means external. You have a port on the outside of the computer in which to plug the disk. Same idea as USB, except internally it goes to the SATA bus.
#11
.... which is great f you've go the eSATA port. If you haven't, then this is a good price for these disks.
#12
Certain motherboards now come with an ESATA connection on the rear, in amongst the USB etc.
They're still a fairly new and/or uncommon addition, compared to the now standard USB2.0.

For example:

eSATA is just the connection type.
"how do you get external eSATA" These backup devices are basicly just casses with a harddisks inside them. To awnser your question you would buy a case which has an eSata port on it and put your SATA hard disk inside it.

For example if you go to scan.co.uk and search for "Network Attached Storage (With Hard Drive)" and "Network Attached Storage (With Out Hard Drive)" here you could buy an external hard disk with eSATA connector.

Im not saying this isnt a good deal just trying to make people aware that eSATA really is the way forward so if you can get a device with USB2 and eSATA this is best :) in my opinion of course

exactly what I've been bantering about.

Especially about people who've been going on every external disk post and saying its not eSATA? who has eSATA motherboards???

doing so on every thread is not really very useful to people.

Those who know which disks come with eSATA and are ready to pay the premium will buy those rather than these cheap hot deals.

Buy a PCI-Express SATA Controller card. Like this (free delivery until Tuesday too).
#17
Voted Hot. I have a buffalo drive and its been rock solid for the past 2 years.

No, I meant the one I linked. It is cheaper. Nothing wrong with using eSATA to SATA cables.

Look its an open forum yes? then why do you have such a problem with me pointing out that facts? I think it is extremly useful to point out to people they are buying IT kit which does not have the latest connections. If Inew nothing about IT and bught one of these then found out latter that my computer has a eSATA port (which most new computers will do) I would be very dissapointed.

I shall keep pointing this out as I don't see anyone else objecting its the same argument when people post about LCD screens not having DVI I don;'t see you moaning about them?

You can buy a upgrade card here for a laptop which supports eSATA.:whistling:

and a PCI eSATA here

Which I would reccomend.
#22
I would say that less than 5% of peoples computers have eSATA connections on them, yet you vote cold because this is not eSATA :?, very sad. FYI most of the electronic bargains that you find on this website are not state of the art and newer/better products are usually available, does this mean that we should vote cold on such things as all 720p tv sets, 1.1 blu ray players etc....
#23
I received mine a few days ago (so will see if amazon will offer me the price guarantee), and so far so good. The drive that came inside mine is this one: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/productmodel.do?type=61&subtype=63&model_cd=249#, which is going for £85.76 on amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000XZ5JBW/hotukdeals-21 so you are paying £5 for an external enclosure. Good deal.
#24
Hot. Let's not have pointless geek arguments about what it's not got. It's not got wireless, gigabit ethernet, Firewire or USB3 either.
It's £90 for an external 1TB drive. Bargain.

missing the point totally. You've hit the wall when aiming for the bullseye.

This is Hot UK Deals where people ask the same question over and over. They'd rather do that than use google or other means. There wouldn't be a website if your 'not really very useful' criteria was applied.

People like Slinkydonkey take the time to help & I salute the donkey:thumbsup:

Thanks its good to know freedom of speach is alive in this country would be a very sad day when we can't voice are own opinions and for everyone said I voted this cold get facts right I didn't so don't put words in my mouth.

Not everyone reads every thread about an external hard drive, I don't, so would have missed what I consider useful information if you hadn't chirped up and said "it's not got eSATA, you know, the new technology gets round the problem of external hard drives lagging so bad" (which I've always considered a good enough reason to never ever to buy one).
Please, next deal that's posted, mention it's not got eSATA and the merits of that technology, and everyone else, don't spend the next 20 posts discussing whether or not such information is relevant when considering which external hard drive to buy, it's not really up for debate - of course that information is relevant.
#30
Many external drives come with a free eSATA adaptor anyway. I don't know why people are making such a fuss about something that isn't so 'familiar' - all you need to know is that eSATA is miles better than USB 2.0, but lacks the all-round compatibility out of the box. It's nothing new - it'd be like having an IDE socket on the back of the computer.

Shame really, because an eSATA backplate plugged into a SATA port costs hardly anything.

The only people who really miss out are laptop owners, who will never likely have an eSATA port :)
#31
Cool.....

i come on here before i buy any stuff online, & im looking for a 1tb external hard drive. £89.99 is great price for usb2, but now I know I can get one that runs quicker, I am willing to pay a premium for this considering I will use it for a few years, it is 1tb ALOT of space! less time hanging around the better. thanks to anyone who points esata out, even on every thread as your not going to read older priced threads!

oh, is this good enough?

if slinky and his friends thinks it's fair on the forum to have every second comment saying it's not eSATA then good luck to you :) to me it's a waste of time and space

Which is your opinion which you are entitled to have this being an open forum.

I value the information on alternative options within a similar price range but there's no point voting something cold for not being something else. If it's a keen price for the item then vote it hot.
#36
I was going to get this but got the Samsung 1TB on its own and an Akasa caddy instead. Didn't want to risk it being a non samsung F1 as all mine are and as of yet all working well (touch wood), although so have my 2 seagates and 1 WD.

Here is a review of the Buffalo if anyone is interested

#37
on the whole "sans eSata" debate, whilst I appreciate that the interface is faster and very useful (to me certainly), this deal is surely for a "1tb USB drive", and a "1tb USB + eSata drive" is a different product, so although not exactly comparing apples to oranges, its like comparing oranges to tangerines maybe. Two different things, one for which you'd expect to pay a premium.

Now, does anyone have a good deal on a "1tb or 500gb USB + eSata drive" as I am looking for one? Or firewire.
#38
I bought this Samsung 1TB Harddrive - http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=723884 but if you go on scan's today only it's £79
And this - http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=817279 Akasa 3.5" eSata and USB 2.0
Total is £103 and used avforums free delivery of orders over £20 ex vat and 20 posts on the forum.
Should get it Wednesday/Thursday and will report.

Wanted the Esata because of my desktop's eSata port and samsung 1TB hdd.

It's possible to get 6% cashback for Amazon (max 7 quid on electricals) if you go via a cashback site called Quanti.co.uk

I haven't used them yet as all my cashback goes through quidco normally but they only take 3 quid annually so could be worth it for cashback I wouldn't have seen otherwise.
