Are we comparing similiar items. I am looking to replace my 100gb external hard drive which is held to the back of the laptop screen by double sided valcro. I personally do'nt have an issue with Play but the comments against that hard drive in the HUKD thread is not that great. Anyone experienced this drive?

If it is true about Play.com warranty only being 28 days, I would not buy from them. But Dabs.com/BTShop, although based in the UK, are much worse for shopping (that's my experience). I'd try to buy from amazon. We bought a lot from there and we never had any problems (and if there was a problem, it was sorted quickly). This is not the same for amazon marketplace, though.

Actually, that's false.
£42 for 500GB, that equals 11.9p per gigabyte. for Seagate's HDD (640GB for £50) that's 12.8p per gigabyte. So technically, this is the better deal.
I was quite inclined to buy the Seagate but it's slightly larger than the rest. I really wanted to go for the WD Passport because it's the smallest external 2.5" HDD but it's £50 for 500GB. Instead I ordered this one, although it's a tiny bit larger, it's Japanese and has better value.

Personally I don't rate Play's after sales service, they are fine if you don't get a problem but not terribly good if you do!

Scan is often cheaper than deals here - but only if you have their free postage:

Sorry, I missed calculated, really should be the other way round. Price: numerator, size: denominator.
This makes it 8.4p per gigabyte (£41.99/500GB).
The Seagate at Play.com is 7.8p per gigabyte, so yes it is indeed the better value, but this is the better brand!
I can't see why this deal isn't so hot. To me it should be at least 100 degrees hot.
The other Buffalo HDD from BT (http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/buffalo-320gb-portable-hard-drive-3/843049), £34.99 for 320GB, that equates to 10.9p per gigabyte, which is less value compared to this one yet that's 450 degrees hot!

price per gig is not everything if someone needs 200gb storage then this drive works out at 42quid per 200gb for them.
also the fact people may prefer smaller drives
and that smaller drives cost more per gig bare and price will increase by a larger relative amount once you add the enclosure which is priced independant of the drive size.
