Well i bought one over a year ago for less than this, by now the price should be in the £30 range, for people to vote hot at £40+ is the stupidest thing.

think you are just upping the level of stupid here.
this is a portable drive not a desktop drive - if you got a 500gb portable for less than this over a year ago it was very unusual (a year ago 60quid was hot) and nothing to do with standard prices anyway - more likely you cant read.

Dont loose your USB cable. It is a none-standard one and will cost you to replace!

I've got 4 different portables and they all use this same socket, nothing unusual about it.
The WD one is nice but the HDD has a proprietary board on it for the usb 3 connection, meaning you can't swap out the hdd. I'm not 100% but I'd assume the buffalo is standard, so the hdd can be replaced/swapped.
I tried using the same cable but not the one supplied with the external hard drive and it didn't work. Windows couldn't read the device correctly. Changed wires and worked fine.

Maybe the one you tried was a mini usb but with 8 pins.
