apparently not, theres a list on plex website of NAS that you can install plex on. I only know this after reading reviews for it!

Voted hot seems a good buy, it's got me thinking of getting a synology nas drive now though as they seem to do everthing but their just so expensive.

Avoid the synology. I bought one and sent it back. Search google for "synology thumbnail generation" problems. They have had an issue going back years that still hasn't been fixed and all the workarounds are hacks which still don't achieve what you want.

i really wanted one of these thing but for some reason, they are expensive as hell. i mean isnt it just a few sata cable connecting all hdd up?

Thanks for the advice, I went for the qnap ts-253a in the end, since seeing this post kept comparing others and all vo it's a lot more money seems worth paying the extra.

No, they have a controller and a cpu and can run apps.
