Had the 1Tb version of this for all of a few months, before it died on me. So in the bin it went. Replaced it with a ReadyNAS Duo for not much more.

Good price so heat added, but worth paying a bit more. Especially if you plan to use it for BitTorrent and such...

bittorrent for what? large free OS distributions? anything else will get you on corporate aka government blacklists.

LOL of course it will!

Had the 1tb version for the past year, had no problems at all. Use it to stream to 1 pc, 2 netbooks and 4 xboxs. Works like a charm :)

BitTorrent, bah. Shame it hasn't got a newsgroups reader instead.

Fantastic deal. I've also had the 1tb one for over a year and absolutely no problems with it.

You can install NZBGet without too much difficulty.

Not looked into it fully but it appears you can install SABnzbd

I'd been holding back on something like this because of the torrent v newsgroup mallarky... Nice to see it's possible.

Thanks for the post AND the info!

Can someone tell me what transfer rates are like over a local area network? Had a NAS before and it was horribly slow, couldnt stream SD video or anything.

"With Bittorrent" that always makes me laugh :D

cracking deal

Nas like over wired network is brilliant. can handle 720p but needs to be wired and at 1000mb network.

Doesn't seem like an amazing price to me as can be found same price on ebuyer and similar prices on quite a few other stores.

6 million users in the UK can't be wrong. Well, I mean they can be wrong, but you know what I mean :-)

I presume you checked that it wasn't just the hard drive? :D

Read the reviews. I was lazy, didn't, and am now in constant fear.

And, it IS noisy, slow, and a bit irritating (because I didn't buy a better one).
#21
Sorry, I'm new to the torrent world. What do you mean? Please elaborate or give some good simple links, anyone.

Good price for a good product. I bought the 1.5tb version back end of last year for about £20-30 more - never looked back. An excellent product.

Heat here.

I've had one for over 18 months, works perfect, takes 5mins to install.

Yes it is not the quickest out there, but it will max out 100meg network easily, so for full performance you need a gigabit setup.

You can hear the fan, but I wouldn't call it loud.

I wouldn't want it in the bedroom though, but in the office it's fine.

NOTE: For DNLA due to the size and price point of this device, it will NOT transcode.

So if you have a DNLA Tv and it only supports mpeg2 that is the file format you will need to store the files in.

They come with 12 months warranty, so if you threw it away you are a fool!

What would people say is the best Newsreader to use?

Can anybody inform me exactly what this does? I mean how is it different to a normal HDD? I know you can stream videos to your media plyer from it, but I can do that anyway with a hdd attached to my pc!

If you're not on a government blacklist you're just not trying mate.

If you configure it as RAID 1 then you get half the space but if one disk becomes faulty, you just replace it and won't lose any data because one disk is a mirror image of the other.

It's just like a traditional external drive but with it's own built-in CPU/software, so in addition to allowing you to be able to access your files from anywhere it can also be in control of downloads, host a website, stream media etc. It can do all this while your PC is switched off.

Ahh thats cool then. I normally just leave my PC on 24/7 but turn the monitor off to allow me to stream from it to my WDTV and 360 etc.

I think I'll go for one of these. Are the speeds faster too for streaming than a basic pc with HDD attached then I take it?

This is a single drive unit, no RAID

I had the 500Gb model. Even with the hacked firmware to enable a bunch of features and improvements the bittorrent client was still awful and terribly slow. uTorrent on my pc destroyed it speed wise no matter how I configured it. Gave up on it in the end.

Grrrrrrrrr. I knew this would happen. Bought one last week for £120.

Please with it so far. Works perfectly on my mac and to stream media to my PS3.

tempted thanks

Indeed Amazon do have a habit of price matching ebuyer, as for those other stores ... what are they?

Purchased. Bought one of the older Linkstation LS-GL models that were on HUKD a few months ago and I love it. I'm going to use this one as my main and backup things like pictures etc that I don't want to lose over to the older model, in a different room in the house.
