You are correct to question that as it conflicting. The 500gl is as it would seem 500GB

Have read some reviews and seems the older live version isn't that great at streaming, I was thinking of opneing up and swapping for a 2TB so made sence for me to get the 2tb newer version.... especially at £139

This is still a good deal though

Anyone know how easy it is to get this running as a Squeezecenter?
#14
Own one myself excellent piece of kit that can do quite a lot for a harddrive with a small processor.

Damn all gone!

I believe there are some issues with the size of the partition that make it doable but difficult, unless things have changed since I last looked into it. There are lots of articles out there if you google. http://forums.slimdevices.com/ and http://forum.buffalo.nas-central.org/ are good places to start

They still have the 500GB for £45, and the 500GB mini for £60, for those that care less about space.
#18
Easy to chuck in a replacement drive if you fancy 2TB. Great for streaming HD media as a DLNA server if you want to flash it to the 'Live' version.

Can anybody tell me how the Buffalo LinkStation Live is different from the Buffalo LinkStation Pro?

They still have 500GB which is big enough for me and this is more convenient than just buying a drive.

The 2tb is still the same as the v1 1 tb only way to get a bit better is to buy the linkstation live pro . And the streaming is fine on the older v1 1tb ones it's only when you want to store files you get 10/100 speeds and not 1000 speeds

^ I mean the older black ones that look like small xbox 360's

Linkstation Live - http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Category:LSLive
Linkstation Pro - http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Category:LSPro

The main difference is with the stock firmware the Live comes with a media server in the firmware, and the Pro has a printserver. However if you change the firmware in the Pro for the Stevie Wonder firmware, then it adds a Twonky media server and also adds bitorrent download capability. It is also quite easy to separately add NZBget.

As for it being expired, they have been putting these drives on ebay for the last few months, so have a look next week before rushing to buy second best.

And as for being refubished, the one I bought a few weeks ago was identical to a new one (with plastic strip covers, etc) apart from not having a software CD and no outer printed box.

One small point to bear in mind with the Linkstation is that after the while the fan start getting a bit noisy (for my ears anyway). If it is going to be kept out of the way somewhere then fine - but I had mine in the living room and the missus found it quite annoying during the day too.
#27
Just to add that the mini is fan free so the above comment does not apply to the Linkstation Mini

Yup all the ones I have start with fan noise not so bad but it's a cheap fan so it soon becomes noticeable if in living room and TV vol down to chill. You can remove fan via screw and clean it to get another couple of weeks of not noticing it but then there it is again.
