I think this stuff is absolutely lovely. At only £1 a pint bottle this is a total steal.

Try it with Ice or just chilled, either way you're sure to enjoy!

Sweet. Use in conjunction with The Sun newspaper £5 off a £30 spend and you've got 30 pints for £25.

Good deal OP and good idea cutthroat.
#3
Cool, I fancy trying this so might pick some up. Cheers OP.

Went into my local Morrisons today and it was over £2 per bottle :(

Is this like bulmers pear cider? I really don't like Bulmers pear cider.

The best i have tried is Kopparberg pear cider from ikea, goes great with a chunk of reindeer!
#6
apparently this is made out of 100% pears so it should taste different to bulmers and koppaberg

hot deal anyway

I tried it for the first time last night. It's closer in taste and colour to Kopparberg than it is to Bulmers pear cider, but I think Kopparberg is easily still the nicest of the pear ciders and this is a not-so-close second.

Edit: incidentally, Kopparberg is currently 8x500ml cans for £10 at Asda. Not a groundbreaking deal, I know, but better than paying full price.

Could be because the offer was on Bulmers pear cider instead.
When I went into Morrisons last night that seemed to be the only cider deal on (I could be wrong)
But the Bulmers deal applies to apple and pear, regular/light varieties.

Beers of Europe have Kopparberg pear cider for £1.89 a bottle and £24 for a case.
Is that a good deal?
#11
Bulmers Pear Cider on offer at ASDA = 16 x 568ml = £14.00.

Thats 87.5p each!! glug glug :-D

It's also illegal because legally speaking, it's NOT pear cider.

Although sadly, the never ending parade of idiots appears to have diluted the term in common usage.
#14
I find pear cider to be just that bit too sweet which makes it sickly if you drink more than a couple of bottles of it. Its certainly not the sort of thing you could down bottle after bottle of in a night out.

I havent tried the Magners variety yet so I might buy a few bottles just for experimentation :-D
#15
Can anyone directly compare it to Kopparberg for me? :)

It isn't illegal. Pear cider can officially be made mostly from apples with a flavouring.

If it is all pears then it is a Perry - but Magners think the customers are too dumb to know what that is.

Actually I am not sure what pears they use as I doubt there are enough Perry Pear growers in the country to mass produce the stuff.

Yes, that's my point, theirs is 100% pear, making it NOT a pear cider.

It's pretty much akin to me marketing tomato juice as "Tomato Champagne"

Is this perry or pear flavoured cider?

It just taste like a watered down version of the apple cider.

Koppa is much nicer - IMHO of course :-)

Similar in colour and aroma, slightly more dry, tastes more alcoholy. I think Kopparberg is nicer, but this offers an far preferable alternative to Bulmers pear cider where Kopparberg isn't sold.

I've grown a taste for this pear cider. Anyway I bought 4 boxes of that Jacques stuff from home bargains at the weekend. Was 39p for a 250ml bottle. Checked in Tesco and it's £4.48 for a 750ml bottle so a real bargain. I can also confirm that it's a nice drink as well, better than the run of the mill pear ciders. Finally they still have a load of cases left if anyone is near Preston.

Close. The drink sold in England under the name "Magners" is called "Bulmers" in Ireland. It is, however, distinct from the drink called "Bulmers" sold in England.

Apologies I thought I'd seen it on here. Must have been on MSE or somewhere I'll remember next time. I'll post it anyway as they have some left.

hot deal and is probably quite nice stuff so have some heat :)

Anyway now thats over with, recommend brewing your own if it takes your fancy. Cider that is :)

Couple of demijohns 2 will do you for around 2 gallons - (free if you can find some on freecycle)
2 teaspoons of cider or champagne yeast - 1pack is about £1
8 litres of any cheap apple juice (no preservatives and must be concentrate) in a carton from supermarket £4 for 8 cartons (ish)
1 bag of sugar (need about 250grms per demijohn)
some bottles - you'll have these from the magners offer ;)
crown capper (about £5) and 50 caps about £1

All in all cost is about £6 (excluding capper) for 2 gallons. It's commonly known as Turbo Cider (TC) and if you follow above will be about 9.5% heh

Just got 30 1 pint bottles on a secondary fermentation (for the fizz) in the house. Total cost was about £10 :)

Easy to make-
1) sterilise demijohns
2) add sugar to each DJ
3) add 4.5 litres of Apple Juice concentrate to containers and shake to dissolve sugar.
4) add yeast (1 teaspoon per DJ)
5) stick an airlock on the top
6) leave to ferment for 1 week in a normal room (not to hot / not to cold)
7) syphon off after the week to another container if possible (sterilsed) (leaves all the dead yeast behind)
8) sterlise bottles / rinse and add 1 teaspoon of sugar per bottle (if you want fizzy cider) or leave if you want flat.
9) bottle cider / cap and shake (if sugar put in bottles)
10) leave in house for another week for secondary fermentation
11) put outside for a couple of week (recommend at least 2 months for best quality)
12) pour and drink :) (quite bitter at 9.5% so add an artificial sweetener if preferred)

Enjoy

No mate, your point was that it is illegal and it isn't. They are allowed to use the name "pear cider".
