I don't get it. Even 54mb is within usb 2.0 specification so why would it work faster with usb 3.0?

When link flow control, packet framing, and protocol overheads are taken into account, it makes sense.

Look up "Theoretical Bandwidth After 8b/10b Encoding (Bytes/s)". So a possible 60MB/s with usb 2 becomes 48MB/s

USB 3 has the same issues at it's own top end speeds, with drops from a theoretical 625 MB/s to 500MB/s.
