probably the CCD sensor for most people, there a much better Sony for much the same price with a MOS sensor, far better quality.

just quoting you so maybe you see this, 2 of us asking for model number of that Sony please!
would like to know also... the DSCW800 is CCD.

OP is tempting, but WB350f is tempting also for £109 ?

the DSCWX220 is CMOS but not same price bracket.. for that you get a Samsung WB350F which is also CMOS and excellent.

no idea why this is cold either, normal price is £75 on Amazon etc. although red is a bit.. red :p

To be honest, my 3 or 4 year old TX5 is still going strong. I would assume that this TX30 should be of better quality and rated to go deeper underwater. I've not had any problems with battery compartments. Only complaint I have is the silver colouring is chipping away although thats only cosmetic and doesn't affect functionality.
Sounds like its worth buying for a trip where you are doing a lot of underwater snaps, grabbing them off it quick and then returning it within warrenty if it breaks but not expecting much more than that....
had the TX10 and this TX30... both prone to crack housing and battery compartment becoming flimsy... both within 6 months of use....

What's it like re waterproofing - a lot of reviews I read seemed to suggest all of the waterproof compacts give out within 12 months or so as the seals can't take much use under water....are these longer lasting?

For this price grab yourself a decent compact with a high zoom from Olympus or similar.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Olympus-SZ-31MR-Digital-Compact-Camera/dp/B00763EUWI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392642648&sr=8-1&keywords=olympus+compact+camera

That's what I got and nabbed it for £105 will WAY out perform this Sony.

so a 16 mega pixel camera, with 24x zoom, will outperform a 20 mega pixel camera with 26x zoom will it??
also the one you linked to is £147.08!!

I said I 'nabbed' it for £105, didn't say that is the current price on the link.

The lense on the Olympus is incredible it outperforms many cheaper bridge cameras even those reaching up to the £200-£250 mark. It also comes with many features that one would normally consider to not be available on a compact.

The lense also has a feature which will turn the 24x zoom into a 48x zoom without loosing pixels! don't ask me how it works but its not just your standard digital crop and loss zoom.

You wont notice a difference between 24x and 26x zoom
You also wont notice a difference between 16mp and 20mp unless blowing the image up to poster size and even then the better lense would capture more light per pixel which results in more detail and colour per pixel so will still look better!

No reason why it couldn't if the lense is decent unlike this one. Megapixels and zoom mean nothing if the optics are poor, a 10 Megapixel camera with a good lense will still take better pictures than a 20 Megapixel camera with a poor lense!

For anyone else interested / following this thread, the TZ60 and 55 were announced at CES today. It looks like they will keep the TZ40 in the range for a while, and it doesn't look as if the new models will affect the TZ40 price in the short term (in fact Amazon prices have gone up again):
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/125898-panasonic-lumix-tz55-flip-up-screen-makes-this-the-perfect-camera-for-selfies

http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/125860-panasonic-lumix-tz60-30x-optical-zoom-compact-introduces-electronic-viewfinder-ditches-touchscreen
..and title updated... :-)
dont forget 2% cashback (quidco & tcb)

I'm looking for a TZ40 too, am hoping that Panasonic will announce a replacement at CES this week that'll bring prices back down (black was only £199 at Amazon a week ago, albeit without the case and 8GB card - red and silver still £199). £30 cashback offer from Panasonic runs until 19th Jan.

The case is worth about £18 - but a nice Lowepro "Napoli" leather one can be got for approx £10 and a 8GB class 10 SD card for around £8, so the bundle looks pretty good value as you'd almost certainly buy a card and case afterwards anyway.

Great tool for monitoring camera prices here: http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/Panasonic/Panasonic-Compact-Cameras/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-TZ40

Hi, am interested in the deal but is there any reason this wouldn't be the better deal?
Does anyone know whether Nikon would still honour the cash back if sold via "pink deals"?

As stated several times in this thread and in others, no, most likely Nikon would not honour the cashback if bought by third party traders. Confirmed by Nikon, the sellers themselves and I actually bought one from a third party seller and had to return it due to lack of cashback eligibility.

Apparently a dx lens is one designed for a cropped digital sensor. A dx VR is the same lens with anti shake/image stabilisation. It's not really a case of one or the other.
The name for each of these lens would be AF-S DX and AF-S DX VR, the VR being the better model assuming they are both same brand and quality and match in all other aspects.
SpoonyBoy
Looks like a good deal to me. It says you get the "18-55mm f/3.5-5.6GII AF-S DX NIKKOR lens"
"Please note this offer includes the Non VR 18-55 Lens, the image shown is for illustration only."

Does anybody know what the difference is between the DX and VR lenses?? and which is the best?

Cheers for the reply, still not taken the plunge yet. Still weighing up whether I should go for a twin lens deal instead.
Check whether they've mixed-and-matched the lens and body from different bundles. If they have, you'll need to send it back to buyacamera for warranty claims (rather than dealing directly with Nikon, or their authorized dealers).

VR is vibration reduction (for a clearer handheld shot, reducing hand shake or whatever you want to call it), similar to IS (image stabilisation) in canon i would have thought that was a better lens but dont know off the top of my head what DX is..

i would say VR wouldnt be essential over an 18-55mm lens.. but theres probs a difference in the performace of glass if you have a look on some review sites

The SB-800 and SB-900 don't cost that much more than this and offer a lot more power... Just something to be conscious of.

The SB-800 is discontinued, and goes for about £200 on eBay used and without warranty. The SB-900 goes for about £319 new and is quite bulky compared with the SB-600. There's the new SB-700, but that doesn't appear to be shipping yet. The best price I've found for that is about £260, but most vendors are advertising it for £290!

Good point. However I have the 600 and 900. The 600 is the one which is nearly always in my bag. It gives a better balance on the camera (and takes up less room in the bag) and is more than enough power for most occasions. (it is nice to have the 900 if you need to light a larger room or have a high ceiling to bounce off for example)

SLR gear is silly prices at the moment but this is a good deal right now. A good flash. A word of warning on Camera gear that seems cheap - I would ask them to confirm in an email that it comes with a UK warranty. Not sure if it will cause problems but some of the cheaper retailers are bringing in grey imports without any warranty paperwork - I was caught out when buying this exact item. The vendor gave me a refund when I threatened to call my credit card company.

A very good point. I'd already checked, and https://www.buyacamera.co.uk/returns.html says:

"All products sold by Buyacamera.co.uk are supplied through the official UK distributors and as such are covered by their twelve month guarantee"

If I'm not able to register the warranty on Nikon's website, I'll be complaining similarly.

I don't know how many times this is going to be said, but the TZ8 is *not* the successor to the TZ7. That, is the TZ10.
I bought this exact camera at the beginning of June from Buyacamera.
Fantastic service, next day delivery, UK spec, no problems.

I would note that delivery is £6.99, but is next day!
http://snapsort.com/compare/Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-TZ7-vs-Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-TZ8

Just a quick comparison between the TZ7 and TZ8. Seems that there isn't much in it even though the TZ8 has more megapixels.
Many people have had problems with this vendor. Amazon have the black version for £188. The red ought not to cost much more but only Pixmania seem to have it at a similar price. It has been superseded by the TZ8 - a better buy (in black) at £197.80 (Amazon).

Personally I would avoid Buyacamera but I have not had direct experience of them.

I bought my Mrs. one of the samsung ones with two screens (one front and one back) from there for christmas, everything was fine, great price and discount for getting accessories with it. Can't complain at all, but that's just one persons experience I suppose

Its £159.95 + 2% Quidco on Simply Electronics - I ordered from them a while ago and it came in the retail packaging and also a one year warrenty. Still voted hot as its basically the same price (which is good for this lens), just though I'd point it out :)

Tried to point this out last night but said a mod needed to approve the post - which presumably they didn't do?
MrHappy37;8492022
Buy a camera sell some grey imports. I bought a panasonic camera only to find out the warranty was useless in the uk as it was american stock. Also they offer a 2 year warranty themselves which has a massive catch, if the item goes wrong in the second year then they can decide whether to offer replacement, repair or 50% refund. Which do you recon they would choose in most cases? Your statutory rights allow you more than this ie, 5/6ths of your money back!
Also if you send an item back which THEY cant find fault with then they charge handling costs. All a bit worrying. Lastly, if they go bust then you have no chance of any kind of warranty, even the suspect one they offer.

Agreed to a point. But, I think that Canon lenses have an international warranty - so this shouldn't be a problem here.

I wouldn't but a camera off this mob however.

not much of a saving really is it when you consider the warranty, i also dont understand the white box bit as if it were just the fact that someone bought it didnt like it and sent back it would still have the proper box you would need to have something like this a while before you threw the box away

Very puzzled by this...... "White Box" business - no idea what that is supposed to mean, as I can't find it on the site, other than the fact that it is excluded from the two year warranty, although no details of what warranty they have!

It is clearly at best some sort of return, but is that refurb, used, or what?
Someone else can try looking, but any potential buyer needs some on paper information on what that means before parting with money, as I would suspect it means second-hand, in the typical way that retailers avoid saying it, warranty period being the most significant issue.
***************************UPDATE************************
Ah... found it.....
[COLOR=Navy]"What is 'WHITE BOX' - Items that are classed as 'WHITE BOX' are very common in the consumer electronics marketplace, in this instance they are unsold returns from a multiple retailer which are then checked by the manufacturer and then re-packaged in a plain white box ! Still none the wiser, probably means second-hand (what other reason is there for returns!), but at least it has a 12 month warranty.
