What about the computer you have to buy first from Tesco?

This is the link they give you when you purchase a pc, hard drive etc. No special code/proof needed.
I wouldn't even install this crap even if it is free. Nothing but grief. The firewall can never be fully uninstalled either with drivers littered all over your computer, very unstable software. Most online banks offer free AV software, such as Barklays offer 3 licenses of Kaspersky or you can use the free ones too.
The CA suite has been listed today for £12.99 and got quite negative feedback (about it's finctionality, not the price). I think there are some review which aren't favourable. But because it's free you may try it anuway. I'd still go for the free Avast + Ad-Aware + Spybot + Sygate Firewall option instead.

Not exactly a freebie as Credit Card details needed to avail the offer... moved to Deals :)

It’s still free like a LoveFilm trial and they require credit card details also.

Slinky,

AVG is appaling; cant believe you are recommnending it. Its the worst av solution out there.

Why didn't you just un-install AVG? it baffles me how anyone can think installing one application can destory there HDD, its just a bunch of 000 and 1111 ive installed it and it works fine its very likely your laptop had other problems before you installed AVG.

I download AVG ages ago that nearly killed my laptop would not load up but it did after a few tries and had no option but to format the HDD. Am scared to download this one as it might do what AVG did.

Personally I would go for Kaspersky suite, if you want to give it a try first I think its PCPro is offering a 180 day trial on their cover DVD - £4.99 for the mag, with a free upgrade to Version 7 which comes out tomorrow - highest rated AV programme virtually every testers choice. I have used it for 6 months, and now installed on my Dads.
Many thanks for your comprehensive reply PoisonJam!

Emma, thanks also for your contribution!

PoisonJam, what full Internet Security suite would you recommend?

To be honest, whatever PC Pro recommend  And right now that's Kaspersky. PC Pro perform the most vigorous and fair labs tests out of all the PC web/mag resources I know of.

I use AVG myself and my router provides me with a hardware firewall (arguably better than a software one). Firefox is my browser of choice. I don't have any Spyware/Adware protection as when I did run them they found harmless cookies and not much else. I also don't have any spam detection software as I use webmail services as opposed to Outlook or Thunderbird.

When you have such predictable internet usage as I do, i.e. I frequently only use around 30-40 trusted sites, and you know what to be wary of then AVG is more than sufficient.

Personally, I'm using Zone Alarm pro on my home PC, it's brilliant.

I use AVG free myself but I've been working with, building and repairing PCs for years and wouldn't necessarily recommend it to lesser experienced users. I'd recommend a full Internet Security suite that pretty much works without any user input needed after the initial set-up.

However, this wouldn't be the first I'd recommend either.
