Ask instore for the VIP price. The word on the web is that this is the best CD player under $5000!

"One of the most involving and rewarding music replay machines we've come across at such a sensible price and an excellent partner to the fine 840A amplifier. There simply isn't a CD player at the price that offers anywhere near as much!" - Hi-Fi Choice magazine.

Welcome to the most eagerly anticipated CD player of 2006! The Cambridge Azur 840C has been a long time in the making, but it's time that has been extremely well spent. In short, the 840C is the most technically advanced CD player in its class - with sound quality to match.

The 840C embraces a raft of proprietary technologies including ATF (Adaptive Time Filtering) asynchronous up-sampling technology which has been developed in conjunction with Anagram Technologies of Switzerland. This system intelligently interpolates 16-bit/44.1kHz CD data to 24-bit/384kHz data, through the use of a 32-bit Analog Devices Black Fin DSP (digital signal processor). This in turn feeds two 24-bit/384kHz DACs from the same company in dual differential formation. Each DAC handles just one channel for excellent stereo imaging, operating fully in differential mode for exceptionally low distortion and noise.

What this equates to for the listener is an exceptionally unforced, natural sound quality. Instruments and vocals "breath" with emotion and depth. Rather than sounding grey and mechanical, the Azur 840C uses colour, texture and fluidity of sound to create a sense of realism usually lost on players of this price.

Both unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR outputs are fitted. Two digital inputs are also provided which even allow the up-sampling and playback of other sources such as a DVD player via the Azur 840C. In addition, a recording digital output can even allow bit-for-bit data or upsampled data at 48, 96 or 192 kHz to be recorded by a suitable device.

As you'd expect from the Cambridge Audio Azur range, the 840C is also superbly built. The aluminium front panel is 7mm thick. The anti-vibration casing features a 2mm steel base. All told, this CD player weighs in at 8.5KG - more than many amplifiers of this price! Included with the player is Cambridge Audio's renowned navigator remote control which will also control an Azur amplifier. Finally, a Control Bus, IR emitter and RS232 connection make the Azur 840C easy to link up to a multi-room system, such as the Cambridge Audio Incognito.

If you're serious about music, and love your CD collection, then Cambridge Audio's Azur 840C will reveal nuances you've never even heard before! Serious hi-fi.

I just ordered one from the Edinburgh branch as Glasgow RS never had any and I should get it on Monday. I can't wait! It appears that it needs at least 100 hours burn-in before I'll begin to get the best out of it. It up-samples both CD and digital input signals to 24-bit/ 384 KHz - that's awesome! Hi-Def audio, here I ****!

Below is a link to a stellar review of the 840C: it's incredibly comprehensive, engaging and free from jargonistic prittle prattle!

I picked mine up from RS Glasgow today after it got transferred from RS Edinburgh. I knew the one I'd be getting was an ex-display model, so I never expected it to be perfect. However, when the guy opened up the box, it had a few scratches and was a bit dusty and I must admit, I was disappointed; but then realised I could use this to get it even cheaper as I hadn't paid for it yet. The negotiations went something like this...

Me: I'm not paying £600 for that.
RS: Considering its condition, I can do it for £570, but can't go any lower as it's already discounted by £100!
Me: I'm soooooooooooooooooo disappointed; the most I'd pay is £500.

We then discover there's no remote, power cord or user manual in the box. RS get a power cord, remote and print a copy of the user manual.

RS: Ok, I can do it for £545 and give you a £30 CA phono cable for £10.

The remote turns out to be faulty and RS get one that works, although it's rather scruffy looking.

Me: I'll do it for £545 and two-thirds off an £80 CA phono cable.
RS: Can't do it: I can do it for £555 and two-thirds off said £80 cable
Me: Let's meet in the middle - £550 and two-thirds off £80 cable
RS: Deal!
Me: [I realise RS forgot to add the £7 P&P from RS Edinburgh and say nothing!]

I pay and as RS box it up, we discover there WAS a (brand new) Remote in the box!

RS/Me: Thanks & goodbye.
Me: I nearly forgot, I'd like £2 to pay my parking fee.
RS: OK, here you go.
Me: [I feel like I've just mugged RS and think I'll probably get banned!]

Anyway, after a quick hook up and 20 minute listening session, I'm pleased to say it sounds fantastic - much better than my Pioneer DV600 DVD Player!
